Hi 'Eggcessive', thank you for your input.
I thought it looked rather like a tumour, too.
She's been recently wormed (finished about 7 weeks ago), has no mites and the few lice I found have been suffocated with oil... will check for more regularly. It had grown even bigger yesterday, and I...
Yay! May you have many years of many eggs! I still relish collecting them even after several years of being 'the chook lady' of the cooperative gardens...
Dear old Bindy (8+ years old) is rather under the weather and has been for a while, but only sporadically - she has her good days and her bad days - the cooler weather doesn't help. Her comb sometimes goes quite dark purple at the ends, so I assume she has some circulation/heart issues...
Hello,
Hoping you can offer input as to a sudden sore eye. Possibly the wee chick got something in it, as it wasn't noticeable this morning and was fine yesterday. The flock have been recently wormed (in the last month). The wee things did have an adventure the night before last - rats chewed a...
Maeve still improving. Salt baths and flushes seem to have moved things along nicely. Just hope she's okay internally. Here's a pic of her enjoying a breakfast of strawberries and natural yogurt. =)
Eggcessive: Will get some yogurt today - thanks for the reminder. =)
Cayucaipa: And yes, the tea tree oil was diluted. =)
Maeve still clucking. Good ol' girl. xx
Not sure whether or not she's an egg layer - we have nine hens aged 8yrs and three 1 yr olds (who keep going broody). We get 5 - 10 eggs a day. Couldn't say if Maeve is one of the elder layers though. Hopefully she'll not lay at least for a bit - the scare of the dog attack and the resulting...
Thanks for your input, everyone. Maeve seems to be doing okay. She's quite perky even though her rear end still looks a bit sore with the inside sticking out a wee bit. No longer bleeding, all looking healthy around the wound (except for the inside out bit). Got her in a wee pen of her own in my...
Thank you. I applied the Tea Tree oil externally only, and then either diluted with aloe vera gel, or water (when cleaning). Her vent is swelling up rather alarmingly and I'm hoping that it is part of the healing process, rather than indication of fatal injuries. Poor girl, she must be so...
Thanks for your reply - sadly, it being a Sunday evening here, and me only having a limited first aid kit (tsk), tea tree oil is my best option. I do have some hydrogen peroxide but am reluctant to use it on this wound because the skin would be so very sensitive. Seems the dog must have done...
Hello,
My poor girl was attacked by a young dog today - being taken care of by a rather clueless 'dog sitter' and he thought it'd be a good ratter so brought it into the field (he's a friend of a friend with little cash). It forced its way into the chicken run (I was just finishing up care and...
Just an update. Yes... Colonel Custard (aka Frances a-Cee-Cee), is indeed a cockerel. I ended up with three boys - Pierre, Pepper and Cee-Cee and had to find them a new home due to neighbours complaining =( They went to the Animal Rescue and Retreat all the way in Kent! So they have lots of...
Thomas(ina) - hatched April 21st
'Siblings' Dee Dee and Thomas(ina)
Wee Dee Dee (or not) hatched 27th April (looks like a cross between Pierre de la Terre and Pepper when they were that age... so... cockerel?) =(
There is quite a story with DD, but I'm too tired to share it right now...
Yes, you read it right. Keeping it short, Kiki, the young broody mama had had enough of sitting on what I now know was likely an overambitious clutch of 12 eggs. Just one hatched. They were a staggered clutch too - over a five day period (unwise, I know). Anyhoo - she left her clutch after...
