Hi. Last week I lost 2 chicks in two days (13 weeks old). I saw one was weak so I brought it inside and it died within a couple of hours. The other thing I noticed was clear watery stool at the end. I went out the next morning to check and found one on the ground. It started shaking (siezure)...
My Isabrown has 6 babies. They follow her around the yard and everyone is getting along swimmingly.
Tonight I was closing the hatches and "tucked" everybody in. I noticed my Silkie hen all puffed out, laying on the floor. Considering I have another Isa that has gone broody, I do NOT need...
Well I love my roosters....love em. I love watching them dance around their "women." I love watching them strut. I love hearing them crow. I love the way they look.
All of my roosters are protective but not mean. If I pick up a hen and she protests they run right over but have never done...
I was told by my hatchery that birds should start laying by 19 weeks. However after browsing their website I found 19 weeks to be the age if you follow a lighting program.
I did no lighting program and my girls started laying around 7 months. Once one egg was dropped the rest of the ladies...
One of my broilers got wry neck. When I first spotted her and the behavior I was sure I was going to have to do the deed. I searched for info on BYC and started giving her infant vitamin drops (without iron). I also made sure it was getting food and water. Sometimes that meant sticking her beak...
I am no expert, as I have only had one successful hatch, but the way the membrane is coming away from the shell and the white, paper look to it, suggests that indeed it is too dry.
I had a chick I needed to help out because the membrane was sticking to it. I got it safely out of the shell but...

I agree with this. Once my mother hen left her nest I gave her two days by herself with the chicks. On the third day I did two supervised visits with the flock, where some minor issues were worked out. On the fourth day, mama hen and her chicks were completely back with the flock. My...
Not sure if this is a possibility but what about a snake?? A snake could probably eat a whole chick without leaving any evidence whatsoever.
My first broody has 12 babies with her and the rest of the flock leave them alone.
Sorry I am not much help.
I just had a hen hatch out 12 babies. I kept her with the flock but in a kennel during brooding. Once she got off her nest I seperated her (and babes) from the flock for a couple of days. Yesterday I reintroduced her (and chicks) to the flock for a couple of sessions throughout the day. The...
Mama came off her nest today with 12 little cuties. Mama has successfully hatched 12 of 15 eggs. Of the 3 remaining eggs: one died early on, one failed to pip and one pipped but the egg got damaged and it died.
Pictures will follow sometime today!
Twenty days ago I move my first broody hen on 15 eggs. I left her completely alone with the exception of filling her food and water dishes. Today I decided to check the eggs and see if there was anything happening. I was shocked, surprised and oh so happy to see a little wet chick stumbling...
My broody hen is nearing the end of 21 days (Tuesday). She has been locked in a large dog crate which has been kept in my coop with the rest of her flock.
A little background before I ask my questions; My coop is divided into two large rooms and one side is divided into another two rooms. My...
My first (ever) baby hatched this morning at 8:55am. Both myself and my daughters were able to watch the awesome entrance. Baby #1 is a silkie. I have 4 pips and 2 more rocking eggs.
My hatch date was May 1 and tonight I have 2 pips from my silkie eggs. I have lots of chirping and rocking. This is my second attempt at hatching after a failed first so I am VERY HAPPY!!
I went to check on my eggs before jumping on the treadmill and I saw lots of rocking and heard lots of chirping. I went back after my run and saw TWO PIPS on my silkie eggs. There is a lot of rocking from the other eggs and more chirping. Tonight is the beginning of day 20.
This is my second...
So today is day 18! I candled them and I still have 11 moving babies . I moved them from the baskets I was using (for turning) and placed them on the wire flooring. I have upped the humidity and now its time to wait.

I have 16 other hens that are laying so I have no shortage of eggs. Will she sit on golf balls until I choose the eggs I want her to set?? I have a laying silkie but it will take me 5 days to get 3 or 4 eggs from her to give to the broody hen. How many eggs can I give her to set?
So I have a Isa Brown hen that has gone broody, I think. This has all happen in the past 2 days.
This is what I have observed:
1) Snapping at my hand when I get to close to her in the nest
2) Not leaving the nest, even at night
3) Big explosive bowel movements once she comes off to eat...and...
So I checked this morning and one was off her nest however the other was still there. I filled up the feeders with food and the remaining one hopped off. I felt her eggs and they were very warm. I added some eggs to the clutch and fresh straw. I came back (from other coop chores) to find a hen...
