Review by 'oldcampcook' in article 'Common Rooster Myths - Clearing Up Rooster Misinformation'

Mine might have been a rarity, but I had a very, very aggressive high dollar Silkie rooster. Finally got to the point where I dispatched him, despite his high value as a breeder. He gave me 9 sons and none of them were the least bit aggressive. I have a rooster and a back up cockerel in each...

    Chicken Breed Focus - Icelandic

Yes, Sandhill has the Behl line of Icelandic. I ordered some last year, but they did not hatch out enough to fill my order.

The top one is my favorite. She is my only pumpkin colored one. The bottom one is one of my 3 pure Behl girls as indicated by the blue leg band.

    Chicken Breed Focus - Icelandic

The third to last (Richard, a Golden Wheaten) and the next to last (Roger, a Silver Birchin) cockerels were purchased directly from the original importer, Mr. Lyle Behl, in Illinois. The others are a mix of Húsatóftor/Hlésey/Behl lines.

    Chicken Breed Focus - Icelandic

The bottom pullet is one of my three pure Behl line girls. I also purchased two cockerels from the original importer and they are in with the three girls as one of my pure line breeding pens.

No, they are two different birds. I no longer have the first one. He has gone to be a flock rooster for another breeder.

    Chicken Breed Focus - Icelandic

As far as I know, there is only one "hatchery" that offers Icelandic. That is Country Hatchery down here in Oklahoma. He is unable or unwilling to reveal from whom he got his stock. If you are interested in raising Icelandic, they should only be obtained from breeders who can trace their...

    Chicken Breed Focus - Icelandic

From what hatchery are you getting your stock, please? I have been raising them about a year. I have 17 breeders and just hatched out 26 chicks a week ago and am hatching right now.

Yup, I am on here. I have both a mixed line (3 different imports of Icelandic) and a pure Behl import line. I am not incubating at the present time, but am getting ready to separate my birds into breeding pens and probably start incubating about the middle of February. I can trace my birds...

If you have are on Facebook, check with Joe Fanning in Lynchburg. He has some fantastic pure Behl line Icelandic. He drove all the way to Illinois to pick up his original birds. I am waiting for eggs/chicks from his black and white pen (he also has a tan/red pen) to add to my Behl line.

I breed those and that is the source of which I spoke. I won't let any "unknowns" in my flock. I don't have any available at the moment because it is too cold to hatch. Will have some later. In fact, I have a shipment of eggs enroute from my source in Tx that I am going to hatch out. If...

For what breed are you looking? There may be other breeders here in Oklahoma. I know of one commercial hatchery that can/t or won't tell me his source one one particular rare breed that I raise. So I sure don't buy from them.

I have deer netting over some of my runs where my pens are located. I also ran red and white heavy cord across more open pens. My chickens do free range outside of those pens and, knock on wood, I have not lost any to airborne predators. I do have hawks around, but the crows keep most of them...

Yogurt in a crock pot (slow cooker) is a snap. Put in one gallon of milk (I use whole). Heat to 124°F Cool to 114F Add and stir in one cup of regular, plain, unflavored yogurt. Cover pot with heavy towel and put into oven. (I turn on the light in the oven. If you have a pilot light, that is...

I have offered excess eggs to some of my neighbors. Some take them gladly. Others won't eat anything but "store bought" eggs. And one is so particular that he only eats Eggland's Best because they are "better" eggs. I normally incubate my eggs in that they are rare breeds, but I do not want...

They sell a lot of "cold" eggs at an auction which I attend and as far as I know, no one has a license. I looked up an old court case and the gist was that unless you apply for a license, there is no requirement to be licensed. That said, as Rinda made reference, all farmers' markets run their...

Welcome Trish. I live near Tulsa, Oklahoma. BTW, I had to laugh at one of your chicken's name. Blue Belle. That is a very good icecream here in the States (without the "e" on Bell.)
