    What is wrong with her??

    1) What type of bird , age and weight. She is a RIR mix about 4-6 months old. As for weight.. maybe 2 lbs? 2) What is the behavior, exactly. She is very listless, holding herself as "compact" as possible, pale comb, and resting a lot. When she rests- she rests chest down, butt up, but I do...

    What is wrong with her??

We purchased 9 pullets(most of which turned out to be roos ) about 2 months ago and have 2 of the hens left. The one in question is a RIR mix who is about 4-6 months(guestimate) old. She has always been more timid than the rest of the chickens, but I didn't think anything about it until...

First hatch not quite a failure yet....

Well- the one chick is doing fabulous! The other one did not make it. He had something wrong with him. I think it was mushy chick disease, but.... We have one healthy chick out of 8 eggs(only half of which developed at all) and our very first hatch and no hygrometer, so I am happy!

First hatch not quite a failure yet....

Well- this morning there was a foot sticking out, but the rest of the chick was stuck in the membrane, so I carefully peeled the membrane away. One of my chicks is out and peeping QUITE loudly and trying to walk! I will keep checking the other one, but not do anything unless e starts trying to...

First hatch not quite a failure yet....

I "helped" some abandoned eggs last time after hearing peeps coming from them that were getting weaker and weaker with VERY sad results. I think these will be what they will be. I hope I can come back with good news....

First hatch not quite a failure yet....

DH and I put our 8 RIR eggs in for hatching on the 10th of April, and they should have hatched out on Thursday. We did not have a hygrometer and since it was our first hatch, we waited a couple extra days before calling it quits. I wanted to open the eggs to see how "far along" they were and...

My surviving bantam chicks and Momma!

Funny thing is- this hen was given to me by my daughter's Girl Scout troop leader along with a Muscovy drake that her daughter was tired of dealing with. She is only about a year old come Easter. Can't catch her, but she is one heck of a momma!

    Egg Bound RIR Hen

Thanks for the kind words. I did a LOT of googling and read and re-read Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens before I did anything! She is frantic to be out of our chicken tractor(the only place I had to isolate her), so if she is still acting better tomorrow- I will turn her back into the coop...

    Egg Bound RIR Hen

She seems to be more alert(she was never bad before, but seems more "back to normal" ) How long should I keep her isolated from the other chickens? Should I wait until she lays again? She is no longer acting like she is struggling to lay and her vent looks normal as far as I can tell(she is more...

    No incubator and peeping eggs!

Well- I had to run to the store and when I got back the last one had already died. Oh, well! Like I have read in several spots here- Nature knows best! Unless I have an incubator- I won't try saving them again. The chicks that didn't hatch were so far behind(at least 4 days) in gestation from...

    No incubator and peeping eggs!

I pipped a small hole(as I think I said earlier. Before going any further- I wet the membrane and it still has vessels and looks bloody- so I left the chick in the towel and also left a bowl of warm water in the box. I will keep checking it to see if it gets better.... Thanks for all the help...

    No incubator and peeping eggs!

The one that had already hatched is dead. I pipped a small hole in the unhatched one and it is slowing down onmovement. I am going to go ahead and help it out. At this point- it is 50/50 as to whether it will survive, but the membrane is drying out FAST and I don't want to wait too long. If it...

    Egg Bound RIR Hen

I have 5 RIR hens that are about 2 years old. Very Healthy until recently. One of the hens was egg bound(not sure how long, but I noticed it on Saturday). I immediately isolated her and removed a broken egg(already broken) from her vent, cleaned her vent area, and trimmed all the...

    No incubator and peeping eggs!

I did place the other egg in the damp cloth. The little fella is still peeping strongly, but is still not standing. He does open and close his eyes and is kicking like crazy..... I hope I didn't do the wrong thing. I didn't want to intervene, but the membrane was stuck tight to him..... I don't...

    No incubator and peeping eggs!

On Saturday sometime- by bantam hen hatched out 5 chicks. She is a free range bird and left the other 7 eggs on the nest to chill while she took care of the 4 that made it(one got trapped in a roll of wire and died). I gathered the eggs that were left and put them in a box with shop lights for a...
