The rod across the middle of the coop is an old shower curtain rod, it's about 1 foot up, they roost on it. Not sure if they are sleeping up there, but all of them get up there at one time or another. Fatmore, my Leghorn, and Cheeseball, my sons Red are the main ones to hang out on it.
My Red Stars, Leghorns and one Araucana (sp?) are happy in their bigger abode! The garage is finally warm enough for them, I think the heat lamp is done except at night, they aren't huddling at all, except to sleep.
I'm planning to have chicken wire on top to keep the birds out. This should be interesting, considering I have foxes, Hawks, and coyotes in the yard on any given day...
We have Nugget, Cheeseball, Fluffette, Fatmore, Cupcake, Starlee, Kung Pow, and some interesting others that I can't remember yet. My 5 & 7 year olds and the neighbor kids named them, LOL.
Thanks! I was concerned. We have plenty of breeze! It's always breezy up here! The run will be a triangle, with a shade on top, so if the hens want some sun, they can get it, but if not, they can be shaded.
I'm debating putting my chicken coop alongside some pine trees. Any disadvantages? On the plus side, there's 2 apple trees there, but will the pine needles make the soil too acidy for the birds?
