What a pity I missed that. How do you find out about shows. I always struggle to find info. Do they get advertised and if so where? Please keep us posted would love to go to the next one. I see there is a Western Cape Poultry Club show TBC scheduled for June. If you hear anything please let me...
Advice please: My Buffs are nearly 4 months old now, they have been on their own, just five of them. Are they old enough to go in with my Blue Orps (3) who are a year plus. Just worried the Roo will be nasty.
Thanks for the info "Whoopsie daisy" I thought that may be the reason so just being patient. Should be an exciting spring. My lovely tame Koekkoek should also start laying then, very excited for that she is a real sweetie.
In the mean time I am keeping myself busy with some new feeder and...
Yip it is them. They have just completed a full moult, it took ages. No eggs from them yet, so was wondering if you new how old they were.
In the mean time I have got myself 5 buff orps, ten layers, 2 ex-batts and 2 koekkoeks. How are your Sussex endeavours going?
Past - Rocky (bantam)
Rolly (Leghorn) he was real noisy
Now - Big Blue (Blue Orpington)
I also have a Koekkoek Roo that was supposed to be a hen. My intention was to re home him and then the guy who wanted him never ever pitched. So I put him in with his "sister" and the two...
Today for the first time in 2 weeks I got a chance to sit and have a chat with my buff chicks. I have been on a training course so by the time I get home they are usually sleeping.
Scramble, whom I think may be male was so excited to see me and jumped up on my shoulder were he spent a long while...
Not weird, I look for things to keep my chickens entertained too. I also have to keep mine in a coop as we live in a nature reserve and there are too many genets, mongoose and caracal around to let them free range.
It is autumn in these parts so this weekend I raked up about 3 large black bags...
Henny and Penny are alone for now, I am going to pair them up with Koekie, my young Koekkoek chicken. She will be alone when her brother goes. He is a handsome young fellow, but getting a grilling from my Blue Orp Roo. He is off to a small holding in a weeks time. I will miss him, but better...
At Last eggs:
On Sunday I decided enough is enough.
Shop bought eggs are rubbery and tough.
My current hens have all gone off the lay,
despite being pampered with mealworms and hay.
So I took my egg money and got me two girls.
They are Henny and Penny and come with no frills
The are...
I got 5 ex-battery hens two days ago and they look exactly like the ones in the video clip. It was awesome to see them take their first steps. One of the girls needed help to stand at first, but it wasn't too long before she was taking her first steps too. I got them as my other hens are off the...
This is one of my five. This is the first batch of chickens I have ever named. I usually only name the Roosters.
They are: Scramble, Fry, Poach, Scotch and Omelette
Oh Wow Buff thread! My first chicks I am raising by hand are Buffs. I got them when they were 3 days old, they are about 8 weeks now. Thanks for the tip on the colour of combs helping with sex determination, going to go have a look right now...
Thanks for the great info on moulting on this thread. Now I have a better idea of what is going on with my hens, I will be more patient. Good things come to those who wait?
They re a South African breed which stem from the Plymoth Rock, the yare very popular here and are good egg layers. I loaded a pic of mine so you can have a look. They do well in our climate.
