Hi guys. So I know this is discussed often and I did do a search, but haven't really come up with an answer to my question. I'm torn between doing deep litter method with pine/yard clippings/leaves in the fall, and using the sweet PDZ/hay/DE combo that I inadvertently bought at a feed store (I...
My 8 week old ladies have been having trouble with the ladder from the coop to the run. It's not steep, the steps are spaced near each other, they just haven't been able to figure it out. I've got 2 Sapphire Gems and 2 Calico Princesses, and the sapphires are clearly the smarter of the bunch...
Hi all, it's been a minute since I've been on this site, 2 years ago my (now ex) insisted we get rid of our ladies and I've been so focused on school since that I haven't had time to build a coop. Now, with some serious time off, and no annoying ex to complain about chicken poop I've had the...
Hi all, I'm having a hard time finding a home for my 3 little boys. I've got 1 Barnevelder, about 2.5 months, 1 Welsummer, about 4 weeks, and one Olive Egger, also about 4 weeks. The Welsummer is beautiful but a bit aggressive towards the other boys. I can meet up anywhere within an hour's...
I'm new to this, and my awesome chicken lady sold me this beauty. I live her to pieces, I think she's gorgeous, but I've looked up pics of what my chicken lady said she was and she doesn't really look the same. Is she an odd color? I don't mind, I think she's gorgeous, I'd just like to know. :)
I came out to check on the babies (4weeks) this morning, and the barnevelder seems to be having trouble breathing. But I'm not sure. There are my first chicks, I don't want to over react. He seems to be having labored breathing, but I'm not sure if that's normal chicken breathing. He also...
I have a friend coming over to help me with my lawn...my husband is deployed and I don't know about what it takes to take care of a lawn. He mentioned fertilizer. I don't do weed killer or pesticides, so that's not a problem, but I'm worried about my free ranging chickens getting fertilizer in...
I was really hoping that this olive egger was a pullet. Now I'm leaning more towards cockerel. It's comb seems to be pinking up a bit. What do you think? (4 weeks old)
Comb
Whole bird (somewhat ragged, kinda pointy tail feathers)
While I realize that three and half weeks old is too young for most chicks to tell, I've been seeing posts about how Barnevelder's have different markings for male and female sometimes. I was hoping the experts might be able to weigh in on this. Here's my little baby Barnevelder. I love it to...
I know they are very young, (about 4 weeks) but their comb seems to be developing significantly differently. In my opinion (as the totally unexperienced chicken mama) it looks to me as though I've got a boy an a girl. Opinions?
And the weather says a freak low of 47 tomorrow night, cloudy/windy. Will my 5/6 week olds be ok outside? Or do I need to bring them back in until the next day, when it will be back in the 90's? *eyeroll* They have all their big wing feathers, their boots and some chest/neck/shoulder feathers.
OK, so I have what I'm pretty sure is a girl/boy pair of gold laced brahmas. One is developing significantly differently from the other. I'm not allowed to have roosters, but I would LOVE to get some eggs out of them if I can. So my question is do roosters start to get really noisy BEFORE...
I've brought the babies out a few times for field trips...the 4/5 week old ones I'm pretty sure can go outside in the shade. But the 2/3 week old ones? I know 90's is optimal, so can I start moving them outside permanently? I'm trying to get the coop made today. Thanks!
Oh, oops! One more...
I was told these are olive eggers. I've tried looking them up, but haven't seen pics of anything that looks similar. I'm trying to figure out the sex. I have one who's wing feathers seem to be all black, black feet with what looks like boots coming in, and one who has white under black on its...
I got these 2 gold laced brahmas for free earlier this week because the lady who hatched them wasn't sure but thought they both might be males. The last couple of days they have started to look significantly different though, and I'm wondering if I got lucky and got a girl and a boy, or if it's...
One of my brahmas is doing something weird...it's molting, so I'm wondering if it's just trying to get fuzz off or something. It's doing an odd chest-down swimming motion. It's almost like a dog rolling in dust, only in the pine shavings. Is that normal?
Yesterday morning I got 2 Gold Laced Brahma chicks that are almost 4 weeks old and 3 3-day old chicks. They are in separate containers. The Brahmas were free because the mama who hatched them didn't know if they were roos or not, so we're assuming at least one of them, if not both are. They...
One of the 3 week old gold laced brahma babies I got today is very loud. Is it just a new environment? I've fed and watered them, they're warm enough. We're pretty sure at least one of the pair is a roo...are they usually noisier than the girls this young? Is there something I'm missing?
Hi all, first question here. :) I have looked around and haven't really seen the answer to this particular question, but I'm seeing a lot of threads about how introducing chickens quickly isn't a good idea. I was hoping to get 3 chicks this weekend (yes, it's Easter, but we have been aiming to...
