    introducing new chicken issue

Yes, did crate the two of them then let one out with the little one. They are all getting along pretty well now. They have met the others and have been sharing water and food through a fence. Things look pretty good now. Thanks everyone for the support and advice!

    introducing new chicken issue

Thanks and you're right. It's hard watching the little one get picked on and, as I mentioned, normally I wouldn't have this particular dynamic but it's just the way it worked out so I'll have to do my best with it. They seemed to be getting along better today. Less pecking and the little one...

    introducing new chicken issue

Could I put the rooster in with the new girls for a time? The others would still be on the other side of the fence. My real worry is for the girl that's getting picked on in the 'new' group. Under normal circumstances I wouldn't have them grouped together but, imo, she's better off with a...

    Wierd Rooster Sounds

My rooster makes the same sound as the chickens when she lays an egg...he does this with her. In fact, since I've had my rooster he seem to 'sing this song' more than the hens do. Could it be that your guy is announcing the laying of an egg?

    introducing new chicken issue

Hi all, I've done a quick search but can't find answers that suit the current situation in my flock. I have three hens and a rooster. They are an established flock with a solid pecking order. I wanted to introduce three new girls but... I have three new hens, one is from a different place...

Against the odds hatching thread (with pictures and questions)

Following this thread.... I live in Belgium so Barnevelders are easy to source here and they really are beauties! I'm debating on whether or not to let my broody Orpington sit on some eggs. Main thing holding me back is the rooster concern so I was really happy to see the comments here. I...

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

Thanks for the help. ☺️ Do you sell the eggs for eating or hatching?

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

Thanks for all of the great advice! I think I'll collect some eggs from the other girls and put them all under her at the same time. One last question, I imagine just keeping the fresh eggs somewhere dry and with an indoor temperature that stays constant will keep them safe for a couple of...

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

Ok, so I took some eggs from her today and brought them into the house. She's only sitting on one right now. Can I put the eggs I took today back under her and just start removing new eggs from tomorrow or have I messed something up? If she's broody she's not laying so, if I want 5 eggs under...

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

What do you use to mark the eggs? permanent marker??...or?? Want it to stay on but not harm the embryos

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

Thanks for the advice on chick starter and waterers! I've got the type with the reservoir on top and a shallow pan underneath. I imagine that's ok. So...different aged eggs? How far apart can the eggs be? I thought they all hatched more or less at the same time but it makes sense now that...

Raising chicks with a broody from a flock of only two

Watching this thread. Thanks for starting this discussion. I have loads of questions about raising chicks too. :)

    She's broody...I'm conflicted

I've got a broody double laced Orpington sitting on a couple of eggs. I have been thinking of adding a couple of hens to my flock anyway so why not give it a go raising my own. I'm thinking about letting her hatch them but I've got a couple of questions and concerns. Will a chicken take eggs...

    Laying pellets in winter?

Hi, I was wondering if feeding laying pellets in the winter is a good idea. If hens naturally don't lay in the winter maybe it's best to give them a break. What are your thoughts on this? I've only had my girls for 8 months so I'm still learning.

    Coop Issues and Question

You know, I think your comments here are just reaffirming my suspisions about plastic....I think if I can't find a decent play house in the next few weeks (used) I'll just splurge on the one in the photo. I understand what you said about the reno @Going Quackers but knowing me I'd botch that...

    Coop Issues and Question

Would it be too big for just three hens? Do they like to be close together when they sleep? Course I could always use an excuse to get two more

    Coop Issues and Question

This is what started me thinking of a playhouse! The only drawback is the felting on the roof I think. And I'd have to make it predator proof. I was considering getting it with the porch base but sitting it with the large door on the back so I could use that to access the coop for cleaning...

    Coop Issues and Question

I've only had my girls for a couple of months but have learned a lot from this place and just from keeping chickens in general. One thing I've discovered is that the coop I purchased was not large enough or designed well enough. Both roosts are in a poor position. One too close to a wall...

    My little trio :-)

I've had my little trio for one month now. Here are some photos from their first day with us (those with the wire in the way) and some of them now free in the yard....I think my grey girl 'Mouse' has changed the most. Miss Kitty (brown) Is the team leader. 'Pepper' is sassy and...

    Koekoek?

Ah...just saw this...no I still don't think you are wrong in my case. When I went down to the garden/pet/feed store to 'order' my girls the choices were, Brown, Black, Koekoek, White, Grey..... Still...I love em to bits!!
