    At wits end. Neighbors dogs

A few years ago I went out to do horse chores in the morning and found 2 large dogs in the paddock with my pony. She tried to come toward me and they tried to attack her. I chased them off with a lunge whip. Turns out the pony had been bitten and her hooves were damaged from running away from...

Looking to buy a few pretty chickens -- upstate NY!

Once you start looking at all the breeds it's easy to want a few of many varieties. Of ours, the easiest for the kids to handle are the Red Star (hybrid), the Polish, and the Buff Orp. The RIR is starting to get very sweet now that it's larger. The Speckled Sussex and Sil L Wyandottes are a bit...

Looking to buy a few pretty chickens -- upstate NY!

I have 1 Silver Laced Wyandotte and 1 Speckled Sussex that we would like to find good homes for. I just bought too many for the size of the chicken tractor we built. They are from McMurray Hatchery, hatched 3/29. They are happy, handled by me and my 9 and 5 yr old kids and healthy. We are in...

    Hens not producing

I can't speak directly to Marans, but when I bought 2 "young adult" hens, one started laying after 1 week and the other started molting after 1 week and was not productive for quite awhile. She came back to be a 5 egg a week girl so I can't complain.

"new to free range" hens stopped eating layer feed

These hens were devoted layer ration eaters indoors but now they are EVERYWHERE on my horse farm all day and seem to be getting all they need. I was so used to doing it "by the book" but if they're happy and laying great I should just be glad my costs are down, right?

"new to free range" hens stopped eating layer feed

My hens have gone from a completely indoor coop to a free range from 7am to dark, then chicken tractor at night situation about 1 month ago. Within the last few weeks they are eating less and less of the layer ration in the chicken tractor that was always their staple in the barn. But, I'm...

    Want to go free range

Forgot to mention... of course you must train your dogs to respect the chickens. If you have established all basic commands with your dogs it's fairly easy, and really a pleasure to see your dogs basking in the sun as the girls work the ground around them.

    Want to go free range

When I go to my coop at 7am my girls are pecking at their plexiglass door. ready for outdoor time. I tried a basic run for them, but they are SOOO much happier free ranging. They come back to the coop during the day to lay, but otherwise they are all around the farm, the yard, horse pastures...

    Golden Comets

My Comet (Henny Penny) is 2.5 years, lays a big brown egg every other day regardless of our cold weather, and comes at a full run when called. My kids pick her up and carry her around and she corrects our Springer Spaniel firmly when her space has been invaded (she free ranges). She is a...

    polish rooster in the cold

How is the temperment of your polish? I've heard their restricted vision can make them spooky. I also heard their crest feathers get wet alot when they drink.

    polish rooster in the cold

The "exotic" chick in my pullet order was a white Polish cockerel. It gets quite cold here in western NY. My daughter would like to keep him to show at 4-H, but if he lives here he will be with the layers (free range by day, chicken tractor at night). Can a Polish male tolerate our winters?
