Lethargic and extremely thin hen with swollen, hot abdomen?

Treated for ascites, and drained 17ml of liquid from her abdomen. We'll keep an eye on her over the coming days. All being well, she can have good quality of life for however long she ends up living for. Thank you both!

Lethargic and extremely thin hen with swollen, hot abdomen?

Hey all, Our 1-year old welsummer hen has started acting sluggish and lethargic over the past 2-3 days. Upon examination, we found that her abdomen was swollen and significantly hotter than that of our other five hens. She's also extremely thin, with her keelbone being very prominent. (All of...

Quail with sagging wing- Sprained? Broken?

It's protected well. Solid wood. The only way a draft could get in is through ~12"x16" mesh floor panels, but even then they have an enclosed space to escape it. The flock doesn't seem to be bothered by the current temperature, they're spread out nicely even at night. I've had the droopy bird...

Quail with sagging wing- Sprained? Broken?

The coldest it gets as of late is -3 Celsius/26 Fahrenheit. The person who sold me them said they didn't need additional heating and were fine outside, and he didn't have them under any kind of heat.

Quail with sagging wing- Sprained? Broken?

It's been a few years since I posted on BYC so bear with me if I should be posting this in the quail category rather than this one. I got a flock of 8 Coturnix quail from a fella 10 days ago. They've been in quarantine away from our chickens since they got to our home, and in a secure, unlit...

    Pullet Curling Neck Under Body?!

We had a house fire in late October, so we've had to relocate to a house about half an hour away from our farm. This week has been bitterly cold (anywhere from ~-25 to ~-40 Celcius), and the coop is not heated. Because we cannot be at the farm constantly, they do not have constant access to...

Not naturally. If I coax it a little it will, but only a few drops at a time.

    ~TURKEY MISSING EYEBALLS~*GRAPHIC*

Hi, I went to let out my chickens and turkeys out when I found one of my turkeys lying on the ground. At first, I thought it was dead, but when I got closer, I found that it was breathing shallowly. I cleaned the visible wounds out with warm water, but as I started to clean around the eyes, I...

Comment by 'WildWyandott110' in article 'Chicken Tractors Versus Permanent Coops: The Pros And Cons'

Question for anyone who knows- Chicken Tractors- In the above post they stated that they aren't good for winter laying, but what about winter survival? I use an uninsulated tractor in summer, but would the chickens survive a harsh winter (-30 Celsius or so) with that lack of protection, even if...

Hatching Duck Eggs for the First Time

Hello! So, I bought duck (Rouen, I think) hatching eggs and just stuck them in my incubator yesterday. Are the heat and humidity levels the same as chickens? When should I put them on lockdown? If you have any advise regarding hatching ducks, I'd appreciate the knowledge.

    Hock injury in chick?

Bump After having to bring it inside during a ferocious wind storm with some other chicks/chickens/turkey poults last night, it's foot turned purple overnight. I'll post some pics later, but it's foot is as if it's been starved of fresh blood. I'm so out of my league right now and have no idea...

    Hock injury in chick?

My day old hatchling has a red, swollen hock and can't walk. It's hock resting a lot, and the leg with the swollen hock is kind of splayed out to the side. The other leg is fine. I don't know how soon after hatch it began. Any ideas?

Wheezing chicken flock in under 24 hours

Hello, Within 24 hours my entire chicken flock (16 adults, 5 chicks) has started gasping, wheezing, and coughing. There is no nasal discharge and and they do not seem droopy. I have not cleaned out my chicken coop in awhile, so maybe that's why? We had a single chicken coughing about two months...

EDUCATIONAL INCUBATION & HATCHING CHAT THREAD, w/ Sally Sunshine Shipped Eggs

I have an egg at around day 21 That's "acting" strangely. I candled it because it had a hairline crack in the blunt end. It was completely black, with no air cell. I rotated the egg and candling torch to a horizontal position instead of vertical and lo and behold, an air cell appeared! It...
