I have one Sussex hen and on copper Maran they are old enough to be laying eggs but so far none have laid any eggs that are a chocolate color.
Do these hens need the same breed of roosters for the chocolate color.???
I just cleaned out my chicken coop this weekend and now my new Marans are using the nest boxes for there roost.
How do I get them to stop using the boxes and start using the pole roosts.?

The wife and I decided that we would like a small auto type incubator and we went with the Brinsea Mini ADVANCE Egg Incubator.
it only will hold 7 eggs at a time but that is just fine with us, the kids get to help and watch the babys hatch.
the last hatch I only placed 6 eggs in the tray since...
well this is my 2nd hatch started with my new 7 egg incubator the first hatch had a success rate of 6 out of 6 so hopefully this seven will all survive, they are a mix of american sex link and barred rock.
will keep you all informed of results on the 29th there due date.
Do I need to give my new hatched chickens shots so they do not get bird flu or other dieases I see where hatcherys give the ones they sell shots.
I sure do not want to have any health problems started.

Well I started my incubator up on the 5th with 13 eggs, my daughter and I candled them yesterday, all but one looked like chicks were growing inside, anyway all of them had dark areas in them, then I dropped one and it broke open sure enough there was a embreo forming inside.
I guess we will...
Thanks for the response,
I did open up the vents, which has help the humidty drop down around 52%, From what I have been reading I should have the Temp around 99.3 to 101 and the humidity at 50% for the first 18 days then increase to around 75% at lock down,
I really would like to know more...
The humidity is to high in my incubator (Homemade) how do I get it down to the 50% that I need for the first 17-18 days? it is staying at 57%-60%.

I just finished building my chick incubator and now am looking for the correct item to use for taking the temp inside, I see a couple of different items people use for putting the probe in so my question is,
What is this wiggle thing that people are using to put the probe in for taking the temp...
