I have truly missed Speckledhens wisdom and straight forwardness,. And also her husband! I have missed her while away and look forward to hearing her plain logic and realistic manner of life, and her chickens. She is a keeper, not to mention Suade, George Clooney of all feathered idols.

Thanks all. There is NOTHING better than guineas for alarm, alert. Friends would come over to our house and be afraid to get out of their cars.
My two rescued geese were the very best protectors. They loved me (sat in my lap for hours and snoozed while I read a book). If someone came on our...
Thanks. Any information is great. Everyone has an opinion and that is fine. Just don't know quite what to do. We have no kids, and as long as the rooster can be trained to be somewhat friendly (I can do this) with the hens I'm fine with that. Plus he will be TINY compared to the hens I'm...
I've been absent for a few months, moving, illness etc. But I'm back, I hope for a long time. In my absence, who are the current moderators?
Thanks in advance,
Mac
Soon we will be replenishing our flock of aged hens, now down to 3 bantams and 3 RIR's. They are nearly 6 years old now. They will live out their lives with us.
I have one bantam cochin, Rootbeer, (my personal favorite) who has in the past been very broody. I would love to order a dozen...

1) all 8 hens (5 banties too) live in spacious coop (12'x14'), 10" clean soft pine shavings w/ de sprinkled. enclosed run is 10'x13' filled w/ 2/3 sand 1/3 top soil, turned over every week to remain diggable.
2) they are fed layer pellets 24/7 and do...
tks, yes, now they are occasionally on asphalt because they have happily become free range for a few hours a day. remember, she is the only hen w/ this issue. eating, drinking, laying and pooping fine.
hi all, its the "other" Mac. been away for a few months, missed you. in short, my husband broke his leg, and i broke my collar bone, plus we moved to the farm, hence the shortness of this message and bad typing. i have only one wing.
one of my 4 rir hens, 5 yrs old has swollen feet. not...
Good grief, where are the pictures???????? You just KNEW we'd all be a pain in the Axx about updates when you hatched the most beautiful egg in the world!! So glad to hear she is up and running around, sounds like a healthy chick. We so, so want to see her...
Great job and heartwarming (although scary) experience. So glad all is going well and you actually found an avian vet in your area.
Not much better for your soul than rescuing an animal and giving it a MUCH better present and future life. You did good. VERY good.
Glad you came to the BYC...
What a smart and handsome guy! I have English Bulldogs and love your American Bulldog as well. One of my favorite bullies of all time was named Emmitt.
Welcome! I have to agree with Marlinchaser, I grew up with LOTS of chickens, cows etc, but my Grandparents took care of them all!! I just loved them. What a great way to learn to care for others.
This forum has enabled me to remember some things and learn a lot more! Couldn't have done it...
