When I was looking for fertile RIR eggs, I went to a farm where the lady said she had some. While there, I found out that while hens are RIRs, they were staying with white roo almost up until I got there. So I only got 1 doz eggs from that farm and also used my eggs (mixed breeds, mostly Easter...
Does anyone here has experience with miniature donkeys?
The one that is here is a miniature donkey about 5 months old. They say here http://www.pamarosapond.com/care.htm about 2lbs of hay twice a day. So far this guy has been getting here about a flake of hay in the morning and one in the...
I mean... which breed were theirs close to? These, I understand: http://blog.mcmurrayhatchery.com/2011/03/08/wyandottes/ which else?
What color eggs did they eat?
Thanks!
I mean those roosters who were not held and babied every day. Would all of them eventually start attacking kids?
Last year we had to send the roo we planned to keep to the freezer camp, because he started attacking my son (almost 2yo at that point, I think). The roo we kept was very nice, but...
We have 6 chickens from last years' incubator (1 roo, 4 hens laying, 1 broody mama with 3 babies started incubator with 3 doz eggs hoping for a dozen layers) and 33 chicks from this years' incubator hatched around March 25 (started with 41 eggs).
Our coop has 3 rooms and big chickens sleep in...
Our chicks are almost 4 weeks old (hatched around 25th of March). Just now I saw them pecking each others' feathers and eating them. They might be bored - true - our first hatch last year was already out for most of the time at this age, but it is cold now (spring is late and chicks are 1 month...
Our rooster has been "missing" feathers for quite a while now (a month?), he started from the neck (although I don't remember if his neck was naked, but his wonderful yellow feathers are gone from there for sure) and now all his belly, part of bottom and parts of legs are naked. Well, there are...
When I was letting them out yesterday, she was sitting on a nest. I was not paying much attention to them during the day. At some point DD brought home 4 eggs and she said Rita (this chicken) was not sitting. Now when I went there at night to lock them up, she was back at that nest! This...
http://picasaweb.google.com/103416668636865771123/Sickchicken?authkey=Gv1sRgCJPimtTioprw0gE&feat=directlink - I won't post pics here, because it is not pleasant (and takes a lot of time too). I was not yet able to get good pics, but she appears to be slow, and has like... maybe part of her...
I am changing the title to reflect my last post. Please, give me some ideas
We hatched 24 chicks, we thought 9 were hens and the rest - roosters. Now turns out that one of the hens... well, does not look like a hen anymore and he is the only one left from the farm eggs (there were 3 total, 2...
I plan to take 7 roos for butchering tomorrow. It is around 11:30pm right now and dd (I was thinking a 5yo would be soundly sleeping during this time, but she stayed up) and I just finished putting them into our car. They are in a dog crate. I know the size of the crate is fine, as 12 chickens...
I hope I am in the right part of the message board for this..
Here is our situation.
We hatched our chicks back in April - they were born around April 23rd and will be 4 months old in a week.
We think we have 9 pullets and 14 roos (+1 roo disappeared few weeks ago). Quite high percentage of...
This would be my first try to post some images to this board
This is the link to the entire album: http://picasaweb.google.com/103416668636865771123/Chicks?authkey=Gv1sRgCJT065nGqM_o7wE&feat=directlink - it has larger images that can be zoomed in - I also put links to pics in this album above...
I have not seen unhulled (unhusked) spelt, but found a local farmer who grows it. It becomes expensive after the farmer pays for de-husking so I wonder if it can be fed to chickens "as is", without processing. Did any of you try or know anything about it?
Thanks!
When (for different reasons) chicks escape the fenced area they are in, would you rather let them totally free-range or catch them and put back? I am not that afraid of predators at the moment, but can't decide what is worse - let them going through the stress of me catching them and putting...
If one chick dies in the incubator and spends some time in there while there are others, are others safe? This might not happen, but asking just in case. I have one chick in the incubator that just hatched. He is very weak and has a pea-size blob on his head, behind the comb, I think. I think...
I am going to copy my post here from the "incubating" forum.
How well does the brooder has to be insulated?
Here is the "sketch" of the early brooder I plan to use (there are few pics there - before and after this one). When they are bigger, I plan to build something larger out of large...
I am dreaming if doing an incubator project and having chickens. I am hoping to do it on very limited budget.
Here are two questions I have right now:
1) can wood chips (3 pictures here ) be used as litter? We have unlimited amount of wood chips, but I have no idea from what kind of trees it is...
