    The Olive-Egger thread!

I'm looking to pick out some olive egger chicks from a lady that has lots of different breeds. Unfortunately she doesn't separate them all out. Are all olive egger chicks dark in color? For example, would a safer bet be to pick out a blackish chick with muffs? In the end, it won't be the end of...

    Blue Andalusian--Cockerel or pullet

That's something I might look into, but at least in the videos I've seen, they can still make quite a ruckus (though some are quieter than others). We don't need fertilized eggs or protection from predators, so he wouldn't have much of a purpose, I'm afraid.

    Blue Andalusian--Cockerel or pullet

It always has to be my "favorite." Haha that's life. I'll still call him Lucy for now! Hopefully I can find a decent home since we can't have roo's with our neighbors. Anyone in the Ames, Iowa area looking for one? ;-)

    Blue Andalusian--Cockerel or pullet

That's what I thought, but I'm not overly familiar with Mediterranean breeds. Are you looking at the pointy feathers near the saddle or the big comb?

    Blue Andalusian--Cockerel or pullet

Pretty sure I already know the answer, but I thought it was worth asking! It is 2.5 months old

Milkweed--will they try to eat it?

I'm planting a large wildflower garden at the back of our yard. I'd like to plant some milkweed for the monarchs, but I know the plant is toxic to poultry. That said, I was wondering if anyone has had a problem with their chickens actually trying to eat any milkweed. If so, what was the result...

    Silver Laced Wyandotte Coloration

Can I expect my SLW to get more white following molting? She doesn't has nearly as much white as I was hoping/expecting, but she is also only 1 year old. I wasn't sure if molting could affect feather color or not. Thanks!

    CHICKS shipped to AMES, IA

Also all of my hens came from Murray Mcmurray. I had to cull both the Anconas I got from them at 6 months. Necropsies revealed that they had lymphoma (confirmed by a pathologist). Unfortunately, this is something they can actually get from the hatchery and it is likely the parent stock of...

    CHICKS shipped to AMES, IA

You'd think living in Iowa, I'd be surrounded by breeders, but I have yet to find many. We've got several hatcheries in our state but I've heard the same comments about them not laying dark chocolate eggs. Craigslist is iffy to me too because I'm pretty concerned about biosecurity and keeping my...

    CHICKS shipped to AMES, IA

Hello, I am looking for some suggestions on where I can get some good chicks. I am looking for a few different breeds and am hoping for suggestions. First, where can I get good Marans? I'm looking for the VERY DARK CHOCOLATE brown eggs. I've heard that Murray Mcmurray's are disappointing so...

    Sneezing outbreak

I have 13 hens in a large 8X8 shed. The hens free range during the day. About a week ago, we had a sudden drop in temperature and I noticed some of the hens were sneezing and coughing. Now everyone is sneezing with only occasional coughing. I have looked very closely and see NO discharge. Their...

    Early Molting?

It appears that some of my ladies which were born back in February are starting to molt. It is the correct time of year, but aren't they a little young? I check them often for mites and we just constructed and moved them into a brand new (huge) coop . We've started lighting it, but I'm wondering...

    Age at first molt?

They were actually moved into a much brighter coop. I'm wondering since the days are so much shorter and we've had a wide range of temps if that did it. We just put them on the light about a week ago. I'll cross post this and see what I get! Thanks!

    EE cross question

As gorgeous as they were, we simply cannot have roosters in town. They would be too much of a noise nuisance. Luckily, a friend of a friend has some chickens and took 2 of the 3 roosters to go live out in the country. We found another good home for the 3rd one. I actually love the crowing. The...

I've contacted the breeder. Something tells me I'll never get a response.

The more I look, the more convinced I am that the white one is also a roo.
