I agree with Hammer about noise time ordinance, my chickens doesn’t make noise in the dark unless something spook them. In Michigan and Ohio, it gets dark at 4:30 ish-5 pm this time of the year. The neighbors must have their windows open in the winter to hear clucking hens.

“Apron” technique is easy peasy, then I weighted it down with bricks so it doesn’t heave up and for aesthetics look and so I can also step on them when checking on my chicken. I had them on now for 5 yrs, I grew mints around them for added mice repellent.

I got 4 Welsumers, and their eggs are always speckled but darker than yours. It’s normally on the reddish side than dark brown side in comparison to my French Black Copper Marans eggs. I attach a photo, welsumer’s eggs @the bottom.

Weird thing was she was sitting for 21 days, then just abandoned them.

34 Eggs Today, this early morning 2 more eggs were zipping under the broody before I went to work. Came home @830s pm, I checked the broody, she left the nest and the 2 zipping chicks dead cold, together with 2 more eggs ready to hatch, that was so bizarre. :(:(:(
