    Stupid question

I know this question is probably stupid, but I am wondering about this for awhile, so I thought I would ask all of you experts. Why are some of my eggs really smooth and some are so rough that I wonder how the poor hen isn't in pain. Is this normal? If not, what am I doing wrong? Thank you...

    Injured Roo

Guess I am looking for someone to tell me that my Roo will be O.K. I think he was hit by a car on Sunday. When we found him he was hopping on one leg. His tail feathers are completely gone and he can"t seem to stand. Looks like one of his wings is also gone. I put him in a large dog crate...

Using deep litter method.. But it still stinks!

I had the same problem. I have 12 chickens in an 8x8 coop and the smell of amonia was so strong is choked me right tight. I took all the deep litter (pine shavings) out and it still stunk. I then put down about a cup of lime and just a layer of shavings and it smells wonderful in there. No...

Any of you eat your chickens?

Yes, I have eaten my extra roos. It helped that I didn't process them, I found someone who does it for $2.00 a bird. It also helped that as soon as I knew they were roos, I didn't play with them. I named them, Fried, Grilled, Roasted, Baked....etc. But seriously, it was a bit hard at first...

    nesting box materials

Thanks for your response. I like the idea of shredded newspaper. Does the black print cause problems for the hens? Heard that cedar isn't good for chickens. I do the deep litter method for the floor, but wasn't sure how the shavings would work in nesting boxes. Any other suggestions?

    what comes first?

The hen was not screaming at all. She just sat (laid) there like a good girl. The hens have small red combs and wattles (just in the last month) and the last couple of weeks their faces are turning red. She didn't seem to mind what he was doing, so I am hoping eggs are coming soon.

    what comes first?

I know, this may be a really dumb question, but I have never had chickens before, so I don't know. Today I saw my rooster doing his thing (the hoochie coo) with one of my hens. My question is, does that come before she lays eggs? She is 16-17 weeks and I have yet to find eggs, so I was...

    this morning they went.....

Just need to vent a bit here. For the first time ever I had to take 6 of my roosters to get butchered. I thought if I didn't name them, I wouldn't get attached to them and therefore it wouldn't bother me to butcher them. Boy was I wrong. It was very hard. I really got attached to them, but...

    Temp. for chick brooder?

From what I was told 95 degrees the first week, then lower temp 5 degrees each week until 70 degrees. Worked for me. Never lost a chick. Of course it being summer, I stopped using the heat lamp when the temp by the chicks was the same as the outside temp. Good luck with your babies.

Hoping someone can help me out. A few weeks ago I asked what breed of chickens I have here. No one could tell me for certain, had many opinions (ThankYou everyone), but now they are a bit bigger, so I thought I would ask again. Does anyone have any ideas?

Mine are about 9 weeks old and have been free ranging for a couple of weeks now. They never go too far from the coop and always go back into the coop to eat, drink and they go in on their own in the evening...put themselves to bed. I was told by a guy who raises chickens to always feed and...

    battery operated dog crate fan.

I had 90 degrees today and was worried about my chickens as I had to put them in the coop early due to a storm. I remembered that I had a fan that was battery operated that fit on my dogs crate. I found it, after the storm passed I reopened the window and put that fan in it to draw in some of...
