    Increasing living space

Part one: I have 10 chicks about 9 days old in a box indoors that provides just under 6 sq. ft. of room, plus having a perch about 20 inches long. Which they use! Since southern WV climate means they'll be in the house another 3+ weeks, seems like I should join a second box to the first to...

    Runny poop

OK. Chickens are 11 -12 weeks old. Just going outside since yesterday since no wire over run until then. Nipple waterers. I don't change water as often as I should. Just add more as it gets low. Yes ... dust etc does sift in cuz lids fall off ... Diet same as always (starter crumbles) except...

    New to the dark?

Chicks are 6+ weeks old, nicely feathered out, nighttime temps 60s. Have 9 of them. Had heat lamp in coop with em til about 3-4 days ago. Was in there close to dark and all heck was breaking loose, all 9 trying to get furthest into the corner, heads between the wall and 6x6 corner post. Total...

Chickies' behavior - change in light source

I had to change the heat lamp out for a 100W light bulb. There was NO way to lower the heat in the brooder. No way to take the "roof" side of the box out without the entire box folding in on itself. (Design problem discovered!) So, with changing just now to the incandescent white light, they...

Giving little chicks a bit of night-time

Have read in Storey's Guide to Raising Chickens that giving chicks a day "night" cycle is a good idea pretty soon in their little lives. Obvious - once I read that! So my question to all is: How did you all do that. Back to Storey's... it suggests turning off the heat lamp for 30 minutes out of...

    Coop Under Construction

Our coop is about half done. Decided that with rough lumber and roof construction, didn't need a lot of vents. Husband nailed in some boards to permanently seal between rafters. Don't have those pics yet. Just put in one window so far. West facing. Doesn't open. Pop door in. But why is it called...

    diatomaceous earth

Does anyone out there use diatomaceous earth in their brooder? Only for the coop once the chicks are bigger? I read it really keeps the smell down - which is what I care about while we have them in the house for the next 3 weeks or so. Getting them in a few days. Suggestions?

    Windows and Ventilation

Good to use both windows and the little ventilation thingies people use to vent the crawl space etc of their house? Coop being built NOW. Oops I'm thinking ahead to zone 5 winter needs for ventilation without letting in tons of cold air

    Nesting Boxes

I notice a lot of henhouse pics show the nesting boxes sticking out from the main structure. The answer is probably in this forum, but can anybody sum it up for me? Benefits? Not so good aspects? My husband and I are going to be building soon and I want to do good this time around. You wouldn't...

    Introducing myself

I finally decided to get chickens! Am starting with chicks: 3 Buff Orpington hen babies and 3 Speckled Sussex hen babies (are these "pullets"? I think pullets are 20+ week old hens). Also one Speckled Sussex rooster. Never had chickens before. My husband has been around them so he had the "coop"...
