What's coming out of her vent??? Emergency???

This is my 11-month old wyandotte, Anabelle. The kids were cleaning the coop this afternoon and saw blood on the floor. All the girls were in the run, acting normal. I checked the whole flock thoroughly, and no one seems to be bleeding, or have any blood on them at all, but Anabelle has this...

    Twitchy silkies?

A week ago, I brought home two silkie pullets to add to the flock. They're quarantined inside the house, which is a delight, but watching them I have to ask: they are pretty darn twitchy. It's mostly these head twitchy head movements. Is that normal for the breed?

Quarantining pullets -- what am I watching for?

I know I should quarantine new birds before adding them to my flock. But other than time passing, how would I know if they're healthy and okay to integrate with my existing flock? Are there good or bad signs to be aware of?

    Pullet or Cockrel?

I bought what I believed to be a blue cuckoo marans pullet. They also had Blue Stars mixed in their brooder, and I was totally guessing. She appears to have little buds on her legs and feet for feathers, which isnt typical for either breed. But shes been rather aggressive toward me (both...

    Nervous about silkies -- advice?

I'm ordering just five baby chicks to add to our small flock. I've always wanted silkies, and I thought I'd get two (thinking it'd be better than one, in case they get picked on in the flock). But since they're hard to sex as chicks, I could end up with two roosters. Ugh! I don't really want...

    Our Chicken Run with Planters

When we were designing a run to protect our girls from a hawk, I was desperate for ideas. Now I hope that sharing might help someone else. We already had two small coops with nesting boxes already inside an enclosure on the side of the house. We enclosed the rest of that side yard. It's not...

    Rosie's Red Scarf

This is my Rosie. I crocheted chicken scarves a few years ago & recently found them while cleaning the garage. She's not a huge fan of scarves, but isn't she pretty in red? tee hee....

    Butternut squash for the hens?

I have some butternut squash that I really should harvest & thought I'd give it to the hens. They have had raw pumpkin before and didn't care for it too much. (They are really spoiled when it comes to treats and food.) I was thinking of cooking it for them, so it would be a soft, warm treat...

    Roundworms???

I just adopted an adorable dog from a Rescue organization. She is curious about the girls, but has really been awesome. She's got some appetite problems, and has had some diarrhea. I took her to the vet and a fecal exam determined that she has roundworms. My vet doesn't do chickens, and I...

    Coop Curtains

My hen, Fiona, has been waking us up at dawn with crazy rooster-like crowing. So I made some curtains to keep things dark in the coop until I'm ready to get up. Seems to be working. I think they're adorable, so thought I'd share. I bought the fabric on Etsy...

Thank you for the run ideas!

We just finished our new, extended chicken run. Thanks for the great ideas! The girls adore their mirror. I was going to hang it, but they spend so much time in their dirt bath, either playing in the dirt, or roosting on the walls around the edges. The plants are all protected in a...

Best thing in your run -- besides the chickens, of course!

We are almost finished building our new run for our girls, after a too-close-for-comfort hawk encounter. It's built onto our existing enclosure which is where the coop, nesting boxes & food are located. The run is 10' x 26' and 8' tall, because I want to be able to go out & sit with them...

    Blackberries & blueberries?

Are either of these plants (the leaves) harmful to chickens? I was thinking they would make great cover from predators. But not if they're poisonous....

    Chicken crafty-bonding with my kids...

So let me start by saying I'm kind of a terrible mother. Well, I just don't spend enough time with my kids. I work full time and go to law school at night and that is time-killing like you wouldn't believe. And add kids, dog, cats, chickens & the small farm.... it's a lot. Thank goodness...

    Food Science

My little girls (6 weeks old) are outside during the day in a coop where the big girls can see them, and they come in at night. During the day, they spill their chick starter (Scratch & Peck, non-medicated) all over the ground, and in the morning I usually find the big girls in there snacking...

Do you have a blue wyandotte photo???

I was expecting a blue laced red wyandotte, but my Molly is actually a blue wyandotte. I'm having trouble figuring out what she is going to look like though. My searches have either had no results or way too many different results. Do you have a photo of your own blue wyandotte you can share...

    Chick Swing???

Anyone have a swing for their chicks or hens? I love the idea of introducing one to my 3-week olds. Pictures or other details would be much appreciated!

Annie -- still laying at 9 years old!

I'm just tickled pink. My girl Annie has started laying again (two eggs in two days now), and she is over 9 years old. After all of the girls stopped laying for the winter, I didn't think I'd see any more eggs from her, but she just never ceases to amaze me!

I need to fatten up a chicken -- ideas?

We rescued a lone hen & added her to our flock last spring. She's an easter-egger, and while the other girls don't love her, she's holding her own. We feed them Scratch & Peck feed, and they free-range in the yard, plus we give them BOSS and sometimes fruit as a treat daily. I noticed her...

    Adding a tortoise?

So it looks like we may be inheriting a tortoise. Not sure what kind yet. A realtor friend has a client with three of them that they need to re-home when the move. I agreed to take one. Tortoises are apparently loners and more than one is trouble. (So we may be adopting a traumatized...
