Have been raising egg hens for several years and just wondered if feeding my girls popcorn is good for them or not. I love eating it but not sure if it's good for the girls. This would be popped corn not raw.
I have been thinking of adding a wood floor and attach some vinyl to it for easy clean up and keep the wind from blowing in so much. We do have nice trade winds that become a bit breezy at times. Not sure how replacing a solid door with the screen would help. Yes I know the air flow that...
I'm not new to chickens..we have had them for years either free range or in a run. Here in Hawaii we chose to have them in a run because we live in the lava fields, so not much grass for them. Since it does get warm here, I built the coop with a slanted roof a few years ago and added a screen...
I brought this up some time ago and try as I can there is no way I can tell which of the 26 hens we have will eat the layed egg...or at least crack and eat the insides before I pick them up. Oh I have caught them, but If I don't check every half hour from morning to mid afternoon they will get...
Always looking for something new to feed the girls and came upon the posts about corn on the cob and was wondering if it needed to be cooked first or raw would be better. We do not free range our chickens because of the dogs and cats and there isn't any grass here, so I have been feeding them...
The girls are about 10 months old, they have plenty of room to roam, protected sides and above the run, they sure seem healthy. These girls are a bit spoiled I guess. I visit them several times a day to check for eggs (someone tried to be an egg eater, so I check often) and have a good talk...
Not sure if this is the proper place to post this, but I have a question about our layers. We have 26 hens (four older that have stopped laying) that are all the same age...two different breeds, black rocks & white leghorns. They started laying a few months ago and it's fun to watch the eggs...
Oh I'm not complaining about living in Hawaii, that's for sure. We have gotten used to items sold here costing more than the mainland, but some stores seem to really go for the kill. Thank goodness for Amazon at times
I was thinking the same about good condition used cartons. I posted in a couple places on Craigs List. And even offered to barter fresh eggs, so we will see. We have asked friends to save them for us, but nothing has come in as yet.
Just checked with MyPetchicken.com and you are correct, only 35 cents each. But when ordering 100 of them, the shipping to Hawaii doubles the cost. I did find some on Amazon for 40 cents plus free shipping. Thanks for the info
Well, we have finally gone through the egg cartons we had and wondered where on line is the best priced cartons to purchase. Farm store here want $1.00 each
Thank you both for the information. We do spray for mosquito's and flies, but the all find a way through the spray it seems. I will keep and eye on them, but it sounds like that is the only thing I can do for now
If it is Pox, is it something I should be concerned with and can it spread to other hens? I have one hen that is a bit off and others would really pick on her. She is one I took back from friends I gave a few chicks to and were not carring for them. She would get picked on allot and had...
Yesterday I noticed a couple of my girls have what looks like large and small black places on their comb. I had seen it before on one that had been picked on and wondered if this is the case again, or could it be something else? Anyone have an idea?
Well, we tried to find a new home for the 6 hens, but it didn't work out. So we enclosed an area in the coop and run just for the 6 hens. Had to place them in the coop tonight and they sure trying to fly out...good thing our run has a solid roof on it as well. The hens that we have sure were...
Early this year we ordered 35 baby chicks and raised them to where they are now laying pretty good. Question I have is this, we gave 12 of the chicks to two different friends so they could enjoy fresh eggs as well as us. One took 4 and they are doing fine, the other friend just let the...
I think the more time I spend with my roo and my 18 hens to more it makes me smile and sometimes laugh out loud. Yesterday and last night we received allot of rain (something we do not get much of here in the desert area) and I sure heard about how the roof of their run leaks...remember, it's...
