I just bought two 6 month old english orpingtons (one blue and one black splash) and holy cow theyre HUGE next to my 1-2 year old buff orpingtons. Are english larger by standard?
I have 6 eggs in the incubator, 2 ducks on day 28 and 4 lavender orpingtons on day 20. The suspense is killing me! No external pips yet, but it's my 2nd duck hatch and I know they are slow and its not time yet for the chickens.
Who is waiting with me? What day are you on? :D
These guys are 6 weeks old. Any guesses on what sex they are? They'e both still "peeping" - they sound a lot like they did when they were babies, no honks or frog sounds.
Cambells duck eggs in a brinsea mini, now the morning of day 29 (counted 1 one as the day after setting since I set them at night)
12.5 hours ago we had 1 external pip, chick moved around in the egg when the light was shined on it (from outside the incubator, I didnt open it) or was talked to...
So its the morning of day 28th. Here's what I'm working with:
- Khaki Campbells
- set late at night, counted "day 1" beginning the next morning
- 3 eggs, all live when last candled on day 25
- Brinsea mini, followed all instructions in terms of water, lockdown, turning, etc.
- have not opened...
The overnight lows are about 45F - I moved the brooder outdoors. It has 4 walls and a tarp loosely over wire on the top (there is ventilation). I have a Binsea EcoGlow in there - there are 3 x 5 week old chicks and 2 x 3 week old chicks. Think they will be ok or should I move them in? (I'd...
I was taking a video while candling our duck eggs, and you can see little baby duck feet kicking away! Thought it was cute. :)

I decided to blog about our duck egg hatching adventure, so I could keep track of the experience. :) Also as our chicks grow up, and managing our flock.

So, USPS royally messed up my shipment of fertilized campbells duck eggs. Today is 3/12 and they were laid on 2/28... so about 13 days old. The seller said to set them big end up so the air sack settles in the right spot for 8 hours and to let them come to room temperature. They've been in the...

I believed one of my girls was suffering from Cocci, so I treated the whole gang (8 total) with Sulmet (Corid wasnt available, so Sulmet was my only option). The bloody diarrhea cleared up within a day, but now I've gone from 4-5 eggs a...

I adopted 4 new hens last weekend- all born in march, and 2 are currently laying. Yesterday morning I went out to the coop and one hen had quite a lot of bloody diarrhea - there was a trail from the nesting box and through the run. There were a number of large blood clots.
I did some research...
What is a good age for chicks to be outside when the overnight low is about 48f (9-10c). I'm assuming fully feathered but I wasn't sure if there was a good age. Thanks!
Woke up to a dead hen this morning. :( Yesterday she didnt come out to eat with the rest but I didnt pay much attention to it, and this morning she's dead. I dont think it was a predator - something did much on her but it was a very small amount, and there werent any prints in the mud. Their run...
