    Camilles Homade Incubator

Camille's Incubator by Camille's Dad We wanted to get the full experience of raising chickens so hatching eggs to perpetuate the flock seemed like a fun project. I wanted to see if I could come up with a working 'bator without spending any money. I was victorious in my pursuit. The hardest...

Need help on home built incubator....

Quote: I'm sorry but that is absolutely wrong. I don't know what kind of incubator you have but the whole point of putting a thermostat inside the 'bator is so the temp inside stays the same, regardless of the temp outside. I absolutely love my "off the wall" mercury bulb thermostat. It is...

What is the best hydrometer/ hygrometer?

Google calibrating a hygrometer. Basically you put it in a bag with a bowl of water that has too much salt in it to completely dissolve. This gives a rh of 75% in the sealed bag. Put your hygrometer in the sealed bag for about 8 hrs to adjust and write the calibration on it.

Building an incubator...what to use for heat?

How big is your incubator? I use a 40 W appliance bulb for a heating element in a cooler incubator. It's hard to beat light bulbs for the price. I bought a mug heater from the thrift store that would heat twice as much volume (85W) for $2. If you're handy you can tear the heating element out of...

We solved the problem with a mercury bulb thermostat The water heater thermostats are very inconsistent from unit to unit. they are also hard to adjust. The mercury bulb thermostats are easy to adjust and the on off temp difference is only about 1 F

Help! I have a chick and no starter food!

I have one silver Phoenix that hatched about an hour ago, 1 day early can I grind up some layer crumbles to get it by until tomorrow? If not what do you recommend? Help! Bird being picked on.

One of our silver phoenix hens is being picked on by the rest of the flock. We have 5 SP, 2 RIR and 1 EE, all hens. All 7 of the other birds are doing it but the EE hen is relentless. She has lost weight but is eating alone now when I let the other birds out of the coop. I have been giving her...

Thank you Mass BYCers! I can't drive the 2000 miles to go to shay20's chickenstock but I bet our friend will be there. He and his SO will be bringing Hula hoops and giving lessons and hula hoops. I know all of you will make him feel welcome!

    BYC members in Massachusetts?

We are in Colorado but we have a friend in Greenfield Mass that wants to get into chickens. I want to help him out with where to buy chicks. Feed store chickens would suit his needs well. Can any BYCers tell me the name of the feed stores in the area that sell spring chicks?

Has anyone succesfully had chickens without feeding chicken food

We gave some eggs to the produce manager at our local independent grocer. Now he gives us the bags of produce that they sort through every day and throw away. Last week we got a garbage bag that weighed about 50# with cabbage, celery, broccoli, peppers and all sorts of other stuff. We run it...

200 feet of extension cords, is it to much??

Camille's dad here. I put a box next to my outside GFI outlet. The outlet is on a 15 amp breaker. I then wired a plug onto a piece of 10 gauge stranded wire about 2' long. The other end of the stranded wire goes into the electrical box. I then ran UF rated 12 gauge romex from the box to the...

    solar heat from pop cans...

The reason behind the pop cans is to increase the surface area that can come into contact with the air. More surface area of heat exchange will drive the efficiency up until you reach the limit of diminished return. The pop cans serve an efficiency role not a necessary one.
