    RIR acting listless

Looks like it was just a molt. In the past week, she has definitely lost more feathers but is now eating again and acting normal. She even pecked me a few times. thanks everyone!

    RIR acting listless

Oh i should note that there are a lot of RIR feathers all over the run. Could a molt be causing her to go off her feed?

    RIR acting listless

Okay another update. She hadn't laid for the last 3 weeks but I didn't think much of it till now since I thought maybe she was just taking a break. I dewormed now with piperazine a few days ago. And now i have apple cider vinegar in their water. She's still not eating feed and still has the...

    RIR acting listless

An update: I quarantined her and am trying to get her to eat. I felt her crop and it doesn't feel very full so I think she is not eating very much. I gave her some yogurt mixed with pellets and oatmeal. Now i gave her some scrambled eggs. I also mixed in some apple cider vinegar with her water...

    RIR acting listless

I have a 20 month old RIR hen who stopped laying 2-3 weeks ago which didn't worry me as much before but yesterday afternoon I noticed she was sitting down more in the run with her eyes closed (always a sign of trouble). She free ranged yesterday morning until early afternoon and seemed fine. I...

    Necropsy results

That really helps! thank you. I'm in california so we're not doing anything to keep them laying through the winter but just the warm weather is doing it. Your explanation makes a lot of sense tho. Thanks!

    Necropsy results

My RIR died suddenly 2 weeks ago and we just got the necropsy report back from Davis and it says this: Diagnosis: System E. coli infection (Colibacillosis). Histopathology: Oviduct and peritoneal cavity. Severe caseonecrotizing fibrinous subacute salpingoperitonitis with intra-abdominal egg...

    limping hen

She doesn't seem to react when we touch her leg. I just noticed this thread https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=145042 Could she possibly have marek's instead of just an injury? I watched her this morning and she got off her low roost to drink and eat but then promptly got...

    limping hen

So my buff orpington (1 year old) had been broody so I roused her from her stupor and was cleaning the hen house when I heard a big commotion like she may have fallen down or something. I had let the girls out to range so I turned around and noticed that Buffy was now limping. She may have...

    Listless RIR pullet

She did end up going up to the roost with the others tonight and even laid an egg (soft shelled). I have had oyster shell out for them for the last week. I'm guessing maybe the fact she is newly laying could be confusing her. Hopefully she will be better tomorrow.

    Listless RIR pullet

Actually just went out to stare at her again, and I do see her tail feathers going up and down a little. What are the symptoms of being egg bound? Of our 3 hens, we got 2 eggs today only so maybe she didn't lay her egg today I wonder.

    Listless RIR pullet

So this is very similar to the other topic of Listless laying pullet so I'm not sure if my RIR is having the same problem. This afternoon when they were free ranging, I noticed one of my RIR (23 weeks) hens who just started laying 2 days ago was acting very listless. She would just lay down and...

    Hen pecking me

Yah, we don't have a roo and she definitely is trying to be it. I was also wondering maybe she is a roo since she isn't laying yet but she looks exactly like the other RIR but with a smaller comb and waddle. And no rooster sounds. She crowed the egg-laying sound (bawk-bawk-bawk-BAYOK) yesterday...

    Hen pecking me

I'm sure there has been asked before but a quick scan of the forums didn't immediatley give me answers. I have 3 hens - 2 of which are laying. The third one (a RIR) who is not laying has always been the least scared of humans but lately has taken to trying to peck us. This morning when I let...

About to lay? or just acting weird

Hmm, the weather here is in the low 80's and their run is shady as well so not sure they are seeking shelter from heat.

About to lay? or just acting weird

I have 2 RIR's aged 16 weeks and 1 Buff orpington around 18 weeks. In the last 2 days, they've started spending almost their entire day in the coop (it's part of an enclosed run). It's a very unusual change b/c before they spent most of their time outside scratching about in the run. I can't...

10 wks old and still afraid of me

My 3 chicks are the same way and I think I may stop trying to pick them up since they clearly don't like it and I think it increases their skittishness when I try to catch them for that purpose. I am hoping they will get calmer though once they start laying (they are around 12 weeks old right...

Coop is done! (lots of pictures enclosed)

It's 2 1/2 feet from the ground which made for a pretty high ramp at first but we raised the bottom of the ramp to make the slope easier for them to walk on.

Coop is done! (lots of pictures enclosed)

Thanks everyone for all your wonderful comments! We're located in Los Altos up in the SF bay area. Yah, we realized the holes in hardware cloth was too small once we saw the size of the poops coming out of them as they got older We'll probably cut the wire to make bigger holes but for now i'm...
