I have a cuckoo maran rooster in need of a new home. I’m in Dubuque, Iowa (Eastern Iowa) and can’t keep a rooster in the city. He’s a nice boy and just started crowing. 11 weeks old as of 6/29/20. I don’t butcher chickens and would prefer he goes somewhere he can live a bit. That said, I...
I think I have this figured out. As mentioned, this was supposed to be a light Brahma hen. I know the hatchery will substitute a similar breed if they don’t have the hatch rate they expected of what you ordered. I think what I have here is a Silver Laced Cochin. Both breeds are sold by Meyer...
We’re at week 3.5 and this bird is feathering so much slower than the rest. Still not looking much like the light brahma i ordered. Maybe a mixed breed? Or maybe this is a LB and i just need to be patient. Here are some updated picks.
Wings coming in black so far
This is a week old Hatchery Chick from Meyers. The shipping label indicates this is a light Brahma. Back is black, light wing tips, underbelly is light grey, feet are feathered, face is yellow but has a lot of black markings (see picture).
I know there can be a lot of variation in Hatchery...
Made it to the post office just as they opened. I was glad to hear I had a noisy box. All appear healthy. We have 2 white Cochin, 2 buff Brahma, a light Brahma, a salmon faverolle, a lavender Orpington, a speckled Sussex and a golden laced Wyandotte, from Meyer Hatchery.
Just got the call, the birds are ready to be picked up. The post office opens at 9:00 am. Turned on the heat and set out the food and water. This is as clean as the brooder is going to get for a few weeks.
The brooder is 3.5’ long and the hot spot is on the end. The opposite end is 76 degrees. They’ll have plenty of room to regulate their temperature. If I see them avoiding the hot side, I can raise the lamp an inch or two.
Yes tested it out last night. 98 degrees under the lamp. I can cover some of the screen if I need to hold in more heat or raise the lamp when less is needed.
I’m neurotically watching my tracking status from USPS. This has been the status since yesterday afternoon:
Your shipment was received at 2:03 pm on May 7, 2018 in MANSFIELD, OH 44901. The acceptance of your package is pending.
Is this normal? This is my first hatchery order, as you might...
I’ve been using sand from the start. Wrapped 1/8” hardware cloth over a durafork and it takes 2-3 minutes to rake out the coop. I’ll occasionally throw a few scoops of Sweet PDZ stall freshener and mix it in. This also helps keep the sand dry.
Welcome to the madness. I’ll be sure to check in to see how you’re doing.
I’ve got my birds on order from Meyer Hatchery. They won’t hatch until May 29.
Good call, I like a colorful flock. Orps are good birds. Since your going for dual purpose birds, I don’t think you’d be disappointed if you threw a couple Barred Rocks and/or silver laced Wyandottes into the mix. It may benefit you in the future to try out a few different breeds now. See...
