Badly infected upper beak. Advice please!

I think I'm going to try and lance it today. Any advice before I try? Everything is sterile.

Badly infected upper beak. Advice please!

Well there's only the one, large, growing lump above the beak. I can try lancing it though. It's already cracking and splitting horizontally down the middle as it's been expanding.

Badly infected upper beak. Advice please!

I thought about an injury too. I went ahead and removed the hole feeders and they have a new coop now without a hardwire front for them to scratch against. I'm not sure of the initial cause but the fact that it keeps growing so fast is worrying me. As far as the comb, it's right above the...

Badly infected upper beak. Advice please!

We've been dealing with this issue for about three weeks now. I've scoured the internet and I've posted online but I'm still unsure of what else I can do for this poor bird. Three out of nine birds have had the same lump appear in the same location on the upper beak. I thought it may be fowl...

    Assorted bantams

I thought I'd update this thread. The self blue oegb ended up being a pullet. She's the smartest chicken I've ever had. She's even learned a few tricks. The other oe turned out to be a roo and found a new home in the country. The one I was so sure was a cockerel was definitely a pullet. A...

    silkie sexing

I have 5 grow outs born July 4-9th. At this point, I'm thinking that all 5 are starting to look like cockerels. I've even had a couple of breeders that are fairly certain at least 3 or 4 are. This is one that I'm still holding out hope for. Opinions? Here are the others that are looking...

Two recent deaths. Now a very sick egg bound hen. Please help!

I had two unexplained and sudden deaths 2 nights ago. Everything has been chaotic and all of the chickens seem to be having different issues. Here is a link to my last thread. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/1116677/impaction-infectious-bronchitis-mites-what-is-causing-this#post_17204901...

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

Her coopmate was dead this morning when I went to check on everyone. She never showed any symptoms. She seemed fine last night.

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

She just passed away in my hand. I've never lost a chicken before. How could it happen so fast with no symptoms? :(

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

Should the exposed birds outside be put on corid or duramycin or should I just watch for symptoms? I cleared out the entire run and coops yesterday. Do I need to bleach the coops or anything on top of putting down poultry dust for the mites? Food and water bowls have been sanitized.

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

I think I'll switch to Corid because coccidiosis fits better than respiratory issues at this point. I think? Its just so strange for all of these issues to pop up at the same time. I've never had any real problem with illnesses or parasites before now in any of our 9 birds. I try very hard to...

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

It honestly doesn't fit what I've read about either one. The first chicken showed signs of respiratory illness on top of an impaction. This second chicken has no symptoms except being on deaths door. It's too weak to hold its head up for long and it keeps dropping its head face down into the...

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

Thanks for the response! The original pullet that swallowed the string seems to have recovered from that. I'm not sure about coccidiosis though. I just got a look at her poo and it's completely clear and watery like the first chick after she swallowed the string. No blood. She's a frizzle so...

Impaction? Infectious bronchitis? Mites? What is causing this?

Please help. I have no idea what is happening with my birds. A few days ago I came outside to find one of my bantam pullets huddled in a corner. I pulled her out and noticed a long black string wrapped around her foot and in her mouth like she had swallowed it. After many miserable attempts to...

    American serama thread!

Oh wow! I had no idea about the short legs being a problem. I've never even noticed how short they actually are. That's a real shame. My Serama hen also has relatively short legs. Not quite as bad as his, but I wouldn't call them long. I'm really appreciative of the info, though. Thanks!

    American serama thread!

I've noticed that my Serama roo seems to have a much wider chest than others that I've seen. He seems pretty short and squatty. Is that an "undesirable" trait? I don't show so it's not really important, but I am curious about specific traits that breeders wouldn't like. [/IMG]

    Can't break a broody hen.

Update: about 2 weeks after the Java finally stopped being broody, my other hen (an Orpington) went broody. While she was in the elevated broody pen, the Java went back to being broody. And the Orpington is still in the broody pen. I give up. I'm giving them hatching eggs.

2 month old light brahma. Pullet?

I guess that just goes to show you that you really can't rely on any of the early sexing tricks. :D This chick was the most aggressive, very upright posture, did the chest bumps, was slow to feather, short stubby wings, thick fat legs, etc. We actually named it Beetlejuice because it was a...

2 month old light brahma. Pullet?

Everything about this chick has screamed roo from day one, but I've started having my doubts in the last couple of weeks. It's especially hard since I don't have another brahma to compare it to. But it seems like everyone else's cockerels had pretty obvious combs by eight weeks. I would would...

    Can't break a broody hen.

? A) I wouldn't get rid of an animal just because they didn't lay an egg for a few weeks. I don't even like eggs that much and give away the majority of them. I primarily use my chickens as part of my gardening and permaculture set up. She'll poop and scratch and eat bugs long after she stops...
