    Beak scratching?

My pullets do that when they're eating mostly. I believe they're just wiping their beaks off.

A lot of folks dont think chickens have emotions...

Quote: I've never heard that saying either...then again, I've lived in Cali my whole life.

TxChiknRanchers: To feed your car envy

CA is pretty strict on window tinting. A lot of shops around here won't do it very dark b/c they don't want to get cited. I had a limo tint on my previous car (which is almost as dark as you can get) and never got pulled over or cited for it, but I know a lot of people that have, so I guess I...

TxChiknRanchers: To feed your car envy

Just take off the license plate. I have never had a front plate on any of my cars as I think it makes a car look less sporty, imo. I live in CA (where the laws are pretty strict & stupid), and I've only been pulled over once for not having a front plate. The cop didn't give me a ticket or...

    Pine Straw

I have never heard of pine straw. I use pine shavings, they keep the coop smelling fresher & cleaner than when I was just using hay.

    When will he crow?

Quote: Probably not until he gets older/bigger than them. My cockerel is a lot smaller than my pullets, he's a few weeks younger than they are too. They like to pick on him as well, but I doubt it will continue once he grows.

How did you come up with your screen name?

Mine is kind of self-explanitory. I own chickens, and they like to poop...everywhere. My BF almost always steps in it when we go out to the coop (while I usually avoid it) and exclaims "Aghh! Chicken poop!"

    List Your Top 3 Mistakes............

Quote: I have the same problem... They even come up to the screen door & chirp at me when they want a treat now. We're working on a fence so that they will only have half of the backyard to poop on.

    What to name them...............

Naming my chickens was hard. Some names just came to me b/c of their personalities, and others went without names for weeks. I named the runt "Chicken Little" b/c she was she smallest, and I named my golden EE "Frida" b/c I thought her feathers were really pretty & reminded me of a Frida Kahlo...

    List Your Top 3 Mistakes............

So far I don't have any real regrets, just a few things I would've done a little differently had I known better. 1. Getting chicks before we had proper waterers, feeders, brooder, coop, etc. (They were given to me as a b-day present by my BF. Best present & pets I've had thus far). 2. I...

What kind of dog do you have?

I have an 8 wk. old Pomeranian named Trinity. So far she's been very curious about our chickens, but I havn't allowed her outside w/ them yet. I'm afraid they may try to peck her or something. She loves to stand at the screen door & watch them when they come over to eat their treats.

    Well, here she is!!

She's a beautiful hen! I'm so glad you saved her from certain death. I can't believe they were going to just throw her away like garbage! I'm beginning to think that a lot of feed stores don't know what they're talking about when it comes to breeds. My local feed store sold us a white EE as...

    California - Northern

I live in Humboldt County. McKinleyville to be exact. That's just 10 minutes North of Eureka, CA. We are the true Nor Cal. If I were to draw the line between Nor Cal & Central CA, I'd have to say right around Santa Rosa should be the cutoff.

    Silkie-Small and gets lost a lot :(

That's how my 'Chicken Little' was and still is sometimes. She was the runt, and very timid. The other chicks would sometimes peck at her, but not hard enough to harm her, and she'd just sit & take it. She was always the last out of the coop & the last to go inside the coop at night. I would...

    Next Year's Chicken Breeds! UPDATED

My leghorns are very flighty. They almost never let me get close enough to touch them, and are easily spooked, and I even raised them from babies. My BR's are a little skittish sometimes, but they will still let me pet them & pick them up. My RIR's are probably the sweetest of them all. They...

making a mess and wasting the feed

I've tried putting my feeder & waterer on bricks also, but my chickens are defiant & just end up knocking the feeder onto the ground somehow & continue to scratch for their feed. Maybe I'll try the pellets this time.

What kind of chicken is this?

Quote: If that's the case, I hope "she's" the only roo. Thanks to everyone who gave their opinion!
