Whats the most humane way to kill a chicken?

I use a kill cone, but instead of making small cuts, I use a string to pull down the chickens head so the neck is exposed and i have a larger surface to aim at. Then one good whack with a razor sharp cleaver. Head falls, body stays on the cone with the feet wrapped so it doesnt beat move much...

Can anyone help age these chicks?

If theyre within the first week, they need to keep around 90f. Though by time theyre three weeks old they can deal with 80s and a little lower. My setup i just keep moving the light further up as they got older and checked with a no contact surface temp gauge to see the temp. Though rule of...

Buckeye Hen freaks out and rams self into fence trying to get away when anything different happens

She's the wall flower. The bottom of the pecking order from how it sounds. Mine was like this for a long time. She was a Buff Orp with 6 RIRs. She'd run around and run into stuff, they'd chase her, peck at her if she wasnt sitting in the coop. Id let her out into the yard so she could...

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

Buy some play sand and fill it til it's maybe 8 or 10 inches deep on top. Or pebble stone, something cheap to fill it up so it's not so deep. Not sure how you're pond is setup. Mines rather small but had a deep spot which was probably around the same depth. Id like to use it after Im done...

I had some Rhode Islands in 99' that would jump into a low profile Rubbermaid container (maybe 5 or 6 inches deep). I tried it with my newer flocks and they just drank out of it. My last batch of RIRs on those hot 90-100 degree days would appreciate being sprayed with the hose to cool off. I...

    Buff Orpington chicks. White feathers?

My Orpingtons I got were about that color when I got them. Around 4 weeks old when they filled in, their color darkened. They're about six months old now, no mistake, they're Buffs. One is in my profile pic. She was really drabby whiteish yellow colored as a chick and she's filled in as a...

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

The Rhode Islands I gave my friend are really aggressive like that as well. He has a bunch of feral cats to keep the rodents from having a free for all around his property, especially his Alpaca barn. He feeds a few cats at the front door, but he fed them early one morning, instead of on his...

    *Buff Orpington Thread!*

When I bought my house a little over a year ago, The guy who had the place offered to include up to 20 chickens into the sale. I figured, 20 was a bit much for the size of the property, and decided I'd just take 10. It ended up being 1 Red Sexling, 8 Rhode Island Reds, and 1 Buff Orpington...

    Temperature for older chicks

My chicks i put outside a little over four weeks old. For about another week or two theyd huddle up at night time in the nest box til they got older and started roosting at night time. they still pack in the corner tight on the roost even though theyre grown up now. (mine is an L shape that...

    Children holding baby chicks

Wash your hands. Thats all. Id like to think its more dangerous handling raw chicken from tyson than it is to pet a chicken in skmeones back yard

    Is this a rooster?

He might not be crowing, but if hes getting frisky, thats a dead giveaway. I had a few roosters that never crowed, and tbeyre going on eight months old now and the still wont crow. the place theure at has a rhode island red rooster whos kind of old. He doesnt crow either and it takes a lot...

    males or females ?

Too early. Usually the places people buy chicks sexed from they use a high powered light and see of it has testicles or not when theyre a day old. Sometimes theyre wrong still. At around four weeks, youll have better clues but nothing solid til later on.

    Nebraskans Speak Up!!! NEBRASKA ROCKS!!

my daughter is the same. She likes the chickens but has lost interest. The rhode islands use to steal stuff from her a lot. It was funny but i think she got fed up with it.

    Emotionally Attached :(

You could see if anyone you know that has a house in a rural area would be willing to take them. Im sure theyd go fast if they are still laying. I gave i think 15 or so to one guy. I still go to see my girls and bring a bag of bread. In a week or two ill be out there again. I recently gave...

Ive got a brood of 7 buff orpingtons. Six of them are still not fully grown. My older hen is finishing her molt now too. My old flock is out in blair, . The guy i gave him to got 10 rhode islands and four buffs from me so far. So his property is always buzzing now. Yea. I wish i had...
