We're experimenting with growing our own fodder to reduce the cost of chicken feed, but I am having the hardest time trying to figure out how much I should grow for our 6 young girls!!
We bought 6 small bins and drilled holes in the bottom. Right now I am soaking 2 cups of whole barley in...
Please post a pic! I'm in CA too and this rain has been no joke. My girls don't care for the rain or a wet run, thinking of doing the same with clear panels along the sides. How much did it end up costing you?
Just wanted to give you guys an update on my poor little bumblefoot baby! I ended up cutting the infection out of the more infected foot because the non-surgical route didn't seem to work so well. These pictures are from a few days after cutting out the infection. Nice blood flow and pink flesh...
So I ended up going the non-surgical route for now. I soaked her feet in a warm bath with Epsom Salt and sprayed Vetericyn on both feet and wrapped them with gauze to keep them clean. I'm going to try to do this every day until I see some improvement. If no improvement within a week, I'm going...
I let my girls out to free range this morning and noticed my 8 month old White Leghorn limping. I checked her feet and it looks like she might have bumblefoot. The bottom pic of her right leg looks the worse to me but that is the leg she is putting all of her weight on. She can still walk and...
I posted this about 3 months ago when my girls first started laying. Now they are laying pretty regularly, I get eggs from all of them almost every day!
But I've been reading everywhere that scratch is just a treat. I've been feeding them the Farmers Best Hen Scratch with oyster shells on the side this whole time and I get good quality eggs, but now I'm worried they aren't getting the nutrition they need.
I heard that warm or hot water draws bacteria into the eggs. Should I "wash" the eggs with cold water before I hard boil them? Or does the boiling water kill all the bacteria? I just hard boiled 6 eggs without washing or rinsing them, they were pretty "clean" eggs.
One of our Ameraucana's just started laying at 19 weeks. They are 20 weeks now and we've only gotten 5 eggs so far out of the 5 birds that we have that are laying age. We are still feeding them grower food and just added a tray of oyster shells too. I guess the rest just aren't ready yet! They...
I guess they heard me talking about them. They were free ranging in the back yard earlier and I couldn't find one of them, I found her in the coop laying down, I went in the house and came back out and there were 2 eggs. Yippee! :yiipchick
Now my only question is, were they both from her??? Or...
Thanks for the advice. This is our first time with chickens so we didn't really know what to expect. My manager at work has 11 and when I told him ours laid their first egg he was like oh you'll start getting them every day -_- nope, only 3 so far and I think it's from the same girl. But I knew...
We have 6 pullets, 5 (3 Ameraucana's 2 White Leghorns) of them are 19 weeks old the other is 11 weeks (RIR)
One of the Ameraucana's laid her 1st egg on Sunday 6/12, she laid every day for 3 days, and hasn't laid the past 4 days.
I heard once they start laying that they should lay just about...
We have 6 pullets:
19 Weeks Old:
1 Ameraucana - started laying on Sunday 6/12/16 (an egg a day so far :P)
2 Ameraucana's - not laying yet
2 White Leghorns - not laying yet
11 Weeks Old:
1 Rhode Island Red
How should I incorporate laying food?
Or should I just put out a separate tray of...
Ok, so we have 6 pullets. 3 Ameraucana's, 2 White Leghorns (19 weeks old) and 1 Rhode Island Red (10 weeks old). We've never let them out of their coop to free range because I'm scared they will fly over the fence. We live in the city so our backyard is not huge, but we were thinking about...
