A well built coop with climate appropriate birds should not require heat. We have Ameraucanas and Wyandottes. No heat in our coop. See the attached photo for average temps of where we live vs. Calgary.
The only thing you can do is to be diligent about looking for nests. We get some paper nests every year. Watch under the eaves especially. Spray them as you find them. Keep looking all summer. They don't only build early in the season.
Your chickens won't be able to get at nests above ground, so...
Some boxes in the basement would work. They won't need heat. Please do not use a heat lamp with cardboard boxes in your basement.
Your snow will melt in the next week, I bet. Get out there and bust a** on that coop! Your pullets are going to be dirty and stinky in the house. You will probably...
My coop is very similar to yours. If your winters are like ours (cold and dry), then condensation won't be an issue in that coop with only seven birds.
My chickens roost on both the upper and lower roost with no issues all winter long with no heat. Same wall/ceiling spacing as yours. Resist the...
I have an Incuview also. Two hatches so far. 100% on our own chicken eggs. And 83% on some shipped Coturnix. I also noticed high temps in the corners. Up to 103 sometimes. After the two great hatches, I figured that somehow it balances out like the Incuview tech told you. We are hatching another...
The wife and I started to do the math on your eating 2 quail a day question. We came up with lots. We gave up, but it kept us entertained for awhile. Good luck!
Put some Sweet PDZ or Stall Dry under the roost bar. It dries the poop out and doesn't get smelly right away like pine shavings/flakes. You can scoop the poop out with a kitty litter scooper.
I love my blue americaunas. I have two hens that are under a year old laying beautiful blue eggs. And I hatched 7 this spring. And the littles are much more sociable band friendly. Not sure which are roosters yet they are 7 weeks old.
Our Blue Ameraucanas hatched out Black and Grey. A splash pattern is also possible with Blues, I think. So it is probable that yours are pure seeing who you got them from. My wife remembers yellow on some of the black ones right at hatching. They are fully feathered now and have no yellow. One...
Our first chickens took awhile to roost. Without older birds showing them, they take some time. Like others have said, just put them up there and eventually they will stay.
This one is named Groose from a favorite video game. Very friendly little snot. We think it's a rooster. Golden laced Wyandotte crossed with americauna. We are calling the 4 crossed wyacaunas. German Shepherd tongue for scale.
Our older birds: Earlich, Two Chainz, Zelda, Reba, Sia, Gwen, Latifa, Green Bandy, Blue Bandy,(Got a little lazy).
This year's hatch : Chicakdee, Warbler, Raven, Junco, Grease, Dodo, Dot, Face Pecker, Birdie Sanders.
