    Chick sitting on head?

It IS cute, but as other's have said, I would discourage this behavior for your safety. I have a couple of girls that have tried to fly onto my shoulder, and this was the result of the first time it happened: This happened REALLY quickly and she immediately pecked at my eye. I turned my head...

Failed miserably moving to chicks to coup

We used an old cell phone and velcro and some app and we were able to watch them from our jobs - it was very comforting to be able to see them! However, we weren't very productive at work for a couple of weeks! (WORTH IT!!!)

    My friends chickens-four cockrels?

Hello BYC! I have a teacher friend who's class incubated and hatched eggs (February 14-17 hatch dates, so they're about 10 weeks old) and it's time to send the cockrels back to the farm as they aren't allowed in city limits here. She has 7 chickens, two are obviously male, but we are...

    Fermented Alfalfa Cubes How To

I have a small scale FF set-up, and if your city chlorinates the water, I find I have much quicker results letting water sit a day at least before adding it to dry feed. It cuts a day off of the fermenting time.

    Broody Orpington?

We too just went thru having a broody BO. I tried using ice packs under her, removed all eggs laid by the other girls, took away the fake eggs in the nest box and physically removed her and put her in the run in the late afternoon and would then block off the nest box. At that point she just...

    We did it! Now what?

You might ask friends/family (or even a store) if they've have any large appliance boxes you can have. Even your upgrade will soon be way too small. Maybe add a branch of a small tunnel for them to play in and on. And have fun with them!

    All my chicks are dead...

I'm so so sorry for your loss! I didn't read all of the replies but there are a lot of smart peeps here and hopefully they can offer some guidance. You'll do great with your new babies!

Best bird that likes to be hugged?

This is also what I was wondering... if the OP ever did get that chicken why are they back asking essentially the same questions?

    Bellevue, NE chicken permit

Hello! Sounds like the person you spoke is not familiar with the process... I hope it's okay I put the phone numbers and the like on here, I will remove that if needed. This is the person we received the permit from: City of Bellevue Mary Lou Schwope Permit Technician 1510 Wall Street...

I'm sorry for your loss! I don't have a long experience with chickens but the Buff Orpingtons we have/had are the sweetest things. One of ours died on New Years Day - it broke my heart! Cute names for them as well - hopefully you'll be able to add more to your flock soon.

    Baby chick roost

When mine were tiny, one of their favorite toys was a piece of cardboard fashioned into a long triangle (maybe 12 inches long and 6 inches high), with a window cut out of one side. They would play in/on that for hours and then crash out next to it. It was precious!

Let's see your dishes for feeding fermented feed

Thank you for that!!! What a great life your chickens have, a fermented buffet - and it looks down right cozy! I'll definitely pin this for the hubby to make. Maybe lower tho as some of the ladies are tiny things. Thanks again!

I LOVE horizontal nipples, but I give up.

That's probably true but... With the nasty cold spell we had here last week, a couple (tiny waddles, no frostbite there) had some frostbite to their combs. The reason I thought it was the dog bowl is that one of them ( a buff Orpington with big 'ol waddles) has frostbite to her waddles but NOT...

UGH!!! If only I had known to just start with the horizontal style, I have a couple of friends that are getting chickens in the spring and I'm putting together a list of things - this is on it! It's so sad to see their pretty waddles all mucked up.
