We use a mix of DE, BARN Lime, and 7 dust. It works well and keeps a variety of creepies off our flock.... mix is as follows....... 4 cups of DE, 2 cups of BARN Lime, 2 Tablespoons of 7 Dust. Keep in mind that this needs to be hand mixed and can be messy. Aside from the fact the the "mixee"...
I agree with chickengeorgeto.... medicated food is just fortified food. If you want to do a preventative routine, I suggest you research the benefits of numerous herbs that are natural solutions to disease and other nasty intestinal issues that may arise. Things like oregano, basil, parsley...
One of our 4 month old Golden Comet Hens was injured the other day (4 days ago now). She had a whole chunk of skin (size of a golf ball) ripped from her right side. We assume it was and over-zealous mount attempt from one of our 5 mo. old roosters. However when we found it it was not "fresh". We...
I have 16, 3-4 month old mixed breeds of chicks (RIR's, White & Brown Leghorns, & Golden Comets.
I was reading that some folks use Diatomaceous Earth to worm their flock.
At what age is it OK, or for that matter, is it OK to practice this.
My "research/reading" says that about about a 1/2 cup of...
Frozen treat is just a bag of frozen vegetables (no onions) in a cereal bowl. just add water, freeze. Then pop it out up-side down, and let them go to town. It's a refreshing treat when it's 95 deg or more in the shade. Frozen Veggie bag is... corn, peas, carrots, & green beans. We get the...
I was actually wondering that, but was not sure. She has a friend that looks almost like her, but is smaller than her. I was "assuming" this second one was too young to lay yet, but I may be mistaken. There are many times when we find them in the same "laying box". Which may explain the two a...
Hello, BYC friends, I have a question.
Can there be too many roosters in the hen-house??
Here's our set-up.
We have 20 chickens total. Four (4) adults (1 Leghorn rooster, 2 game hens, 1 silkie hen) and 16, 3 & 4 month old chicks.
Chicks are 7 golden comet pullets, 3 Leghorn pullets, 1...
Here's a better pic of her, sharing a frozen veggie treat in this Florida 95 deg. heat.
She's an awesome egg layer (2 a day average), but eggs are not brown, nor white.
They are more of a light "tan", light the feathers just above her legs.
OK, What am I ?? I have 7 brothers and sisters.
None of us look completely the same. But we are ALL
very mild tempered and love being held/cuddled.
Of course the two on the right of pic are not
my siblings, just coop mates.
A RIR & a White Leghorn, we all get along very well.
Hello, My name is Silkie....
Not that I have a "tude", but if
I'm not Pic of the Week, somebody
will have to answer to ME !!
Then there are days I just want to be held.
I'm "moody" like that.
But Ya Gotta love me !!
Hello BYC Community,
While I'm not a "brand new" BYC member I am fairly new to our flock of 20. 16 chicks, & 4 adults. I had raised chickens while i was a child, a long time ago, it seems. We had 150-200 in a huge "chicken house" on our small 3 acre farm in PA. We now live in Florida and...
That makes sense that he has some Leghorn in him, he has "flighty" tendencies. A very tolerant bird, he just doesn't care to be handled or especially cornered. However He, (the rooster) believe it or not, is the best acting of our four adults when around the 16 chicks... He just gives the...
We've been doing the integration for about a weeks now, 2 times a day for about an hour each time. I think we are going to move up to about 2 hours each next week. The adult hens still seem to wanna show their dominance, especially around the food.
We use BARN lime under their pine shavings bedding and in the run. A 50lbs. bag is only about $3.00 or less. Please ensure it is BARN lime, other types are caustic and can "burn" your chickens. This also "cuts down" on that heavy ammonia smell produced by their droppings.
Here is a "sample" of...
We have 16, 3 month old Chicks (4 Leghorns, 3 RIR's, 7 Golden Comets, & 2 Bantam Mix) and we have 4 adults (1 Deleware Wyandotte (pic attached), 2 Moran hens, & 1 Silkie).
1) I've read numerous threads on when and how to integrate these (16) chicks into the coop/flock. Right now they separated...
May I ask... what is their water in? This may not be an illness, it may be drowning. Make sure the water container is not too big for your chicks. If they can place their entire head in the water, it is too big/deep and they may be drowning. The "gasping motion" may be them trying to get air in...
