    Gravel in coop?

So we are switching our bedding in the coop from shavings to sand. My mother ordered the sand, but she accidentally ordered multi-purpose gravel. Instead of taking back the $100+ worth of gravel, would it be safe to use as a bedding? Or is it too coarse/big.

    Scalped chick (graphic)

Recently my seramas started hatching out a bunch of chicks, but all the hens decided they should be the mothers. So occasionally there may be a little scuffle every now and then, but nothing more than a few pecks. I noticed one of the newest chicks(1-2 days old) was scalped. I think it got in...

    Ivermax pour-on for chickens

Has anyone ever used this specific kind for chicken mites? If so, how well did it work and what dosage did you use?

    Chick stretching and opening mouth.

I have a 3ish(not sure) month old Polish hen who keeps stretching her neck out with her mouth wide open. She will do it several times in a row, and for however long I’m holding her. It isn’t related to her breathing from the looks of it, she isn’t gasping and she sounds fine with a stethoscope...

    Eye injury

I noticed my Muscovy hen had one eye closed, so I went over to her. She couldn’t see me through that eye and kept hitting things. I noticed this. It looks like something pierced her eye. I’ve cleaned it out with saline solution. Is there any medicine I can put on it? Or is it better to just keep...

    Chicken wheezing

I noticed just a little bit ago my hen is having a horrible time breathing. Every time she takes a breath there’s a deep rasp, and an almost cry like cluck as she breaths out. She’s still active, eating and drinking like normal. I didn’t notice anything wrong yesterday or this morning when I...

    Is this frostbite?

I have a serama rooster who was out in the cold(only 35ish degrees, wasn’t below freezing). I put him and his girls in my heated shed. I just noticed this on his comb, and didn’t see this when I first moved them. Is this frostbite? If so what can I do for it? It doesn’t seem to bother him, not sore.

    Below freezing temps

How cold is too cold for my birds? It was 5~10 degrees yesterday, -1~8 degrees today, and supposed to get -16 tomorrow. I’ve got my quail and bantams in a shed with a heater, they don’t go out at all. My other birds(ducks chickens) are in a metal shed and aren’t being let out. However, my...

    Chick can’t close eye

So I have a chick that just recently hatched(week old today) that can’t close one of its eyes. It is slightly smaller than the other eye, and it’s like it just doesn’t have the skin there to close. Im constantly having to clean the eye, as it keeps getting food and debris stuck in it no matter...

    Muscovies and biting the air

So I noticed there’s a behavior muscovies do, where they stand there wagging their tails and ‘biting’ the air. My male Muscovy does it more then my hens do, he just stands on his tippy toes doing it. And the females come join occasionally. It’s not like they are catching insects, it’s like a...

    Splayed leg

My cousin dropped off a chick that she found with severe splayed legs. I have them taped together with a bandaid, but my issue is keeping its head up. I tried putting a stuffed animal in the cage to keep it propped up in between the legs, but it throws a fit and manages to wiggle out. It can’t...

    Swollen toe

I noticed one of my ducks had a swollen toe. It’s just the fourth one, around the base of it. It’s soft/squishy to the touch, and her toe is still moveable. What could be the issue?

    Getting rid of grass

Does anyone have any tips of getting rid of grass? I used to use a spray, but haven’t needed to since I got chickens. Weed eating and pulling by hand is only getting me so far. So if anyone has any chicken safe suggestions, I’m all ears!

    Fake plants

Has anyone ever used fake plants for their pheasant pen? Where I built mine no plants will grow, but I want them to have some coverage. Or if there’s any low light bushes/coverage, I could try pots?

    Polish chick attacked

Somehow one of my hens got in my chick pen, which is very secured and I’m not sure how, and attacked my polish chick. He’s bald on the top of his head and both eyes are very swollen. He can sit upright but he is very unbalanced. I don’t believe he can see. I have him all cleaned up and under a...

    Heat stroke

When I woke up this morning I realized it was already noon and the chickens/ducks hadn’t been let out. When I opened the doors, 9 had already passed away and two are in critical condition. Due to my narcolepsy, this isn’t the first time it’s happened. I feel like the shittiest owner every time...

    Possible angel wing?

I’ve noticed my duckling has an outturned wing. Could it be angel wing? I thought it was caused by feeding bread or anything like that, but she’s never been fed anything like that. Could I perhaps wrap some stuff around it to keep it from growing outwards or just let it happen?

    Chick with out turned leg

-Posting for a friend- ‘We got some hatching eggs from someone and this chick came out like this. I would LOVE to be able to fix it to some extent so it has a some what comfortable life.... if it’s something that can’t be helped I will make sure it doesn’t suffer. But for the time being it’s...

    Foot won’t stop bleeding

I was trying to cut out some Bumblefoot on my chicken, and I guess I cut an artery. It’s been bleeding for 30ish minutes with no signs of stopping. I’ve been putting even pressure on it, and her foot is on an ice pack as well. Is there anything else I can do?

    Cocci in chick?

So I noticed one of my chicks has bloody droppings. I have Corid, so I plan on treating it and the other chicks with that. I’m not sure on the dosage. Another thing is, I have ducklings with them. Can they drink it too or should I separate? (they are about 6 weeks old)
