February 3rd: My first chicken blog I have returned from 2 months abroad to find all my hens alive and laying. My Polish aunt must have pampered them a bit because the one that had no butt feathers is feathered, the one that survived an attack is in full health, and the rest are fearless of...

    Toulouse geese cause fatality

The geese were raised with the hens, and they are all free-ranging with heaps of room. I think I may just have to sell the pair to a 4-H club. Too bad, as the goose has just started laying her eggs.

    Toulouse geese cause fatality

They roost in separate places, but share the run. In winter, they are in my 2-acre fenced in farmden, and in season they are all in 2-lengths of movable electronet. It all seems like heaps of space to me... Yikes! Roo jerky.

    Toulouse geese cause fatality

I have a beautiful pair of Toulouse geese that have recently begun attacking my chickens. They attack my roosters, several of whom now have no neck feathers, and they also try to mount some of my hens. One of my ladies was crushed by the goose and was limping. I separated the hen, put her in...

Stay tuned for a new song on the Hudson Valley Farmers taking over to the Ag and Open spaces committee and the PTA...

Parents, Is it too much? Rant... Kinda... Update post #29

Maybe MIL and MIL's mother just opened themselves up to baby-sitting duties? If it's so "time-consuming" to tend to your hens, then maybe they should be around to change Luke, oh and do some dishes and laundry while they're there...

    "Chicken Thief" song!

The only good thing that came of my whole flock of hens being stolen last April (all 19 of them!) is the soon-to-be hit song that my fiance wrote about it. He's put it on his website to download for free, along with some other farm-inspired tunes, such as "Let's eat food". feel free to check...

    Moyer's K22 - behavior

Hi guys, Some neighbors and I are going in for Moyer's K22s this spring and fall. I was wondering if any of you had information on the following topics: 1. foraging vs. grain eating (i.e. how much grain is needed if they are pastured and moved regularly on good pasture) and 2. roosting (i.e...

Chicken Rustlers in the Hudson River Valley :barnie

Wow, thanks for all the kind remarks guys. The chicken thief was never captured, but my fiance has written what is sure to be a hit single called "the chicken thief". I think it's even uploadable from his website for free if any of you wants to hear it : www.louismunroe.com ! I had a good...

Chicken Rustlers in the Hudson River Valley :barnie

Thanks for the replies and the well-wishes. The Red Hook police are following one lead, and I'm calling all the animal auctions I can find, but those are few. I figure that at this point, spreading the word and encouraging other chicken keepers to be careful about their flocks. In the...

Chicken Rustlers in the Hudson River Valley :barnie

I'm not hopeful about finding the girls again, which is heart-breaking. I've been perusing the emu and ostrich pages and thinking about that sort of surveillance... What a surprise that would be for the slime ball!

    Ostriches for Property Protection?

What does an emu eat?! What a stunning bird. I imagine the fellow who stole my flock of hens would have thought twice if I had one of those patrolling the grounds. Do they just intimidate people, or do they also make noise when there's an intruder?

Some surveillance would be good. In the meantime, I'm looking for a good dog.

Chicken Rustlers in the Hudson River Valley :barnie

We have been the victims of an out-dated crime! Our entire flock of 19 layers was stolen from the coop. I assumed at first that it was an animal, of course, but all the evidence (tire tracks, open human door, not a single feather on the fresh bedding, and more) point to thievery. We are...

wheezing wyandotte - please give advice

Thank you Hencackle and Quiltnchick for your advice. UNfortunately, the sweet thing did not make it through the night. I'll be keeping a close eye on the flock. Any ideas what could cause death in 48 hours? I imagine she could have asphyxiated. So sad.

wheezing wyandotte - please give advice

That's a good idea. I'll add a little apple cider vinegar to her garlic water - YUM! (that's actually what I take when I have a cold). Thanks Hencackle.

wheezing wyandotte - please give advice

Her comb is red, with no signs of blueing. Is there an antihistamine that might be appropriate to give her, if the labored breathing is due to swelling in her throat and sinuses? I'm terrified to give her anything made for people because I'm worried I'll get the dose wrong.

wheezing wyandotte - please give advice

Oh, man. Thanks quiltnchik. That's hard news to hear. I'll give her a few more days to recover as other posts point to that being a possibility. Do you think it would be unwise to eat a bird with this kind of problem? I imagine plenty of factory birds are riddled with problems and people...

wheezing wyandotte - please give advice

My one year-old Wyandotte has been wheezing since the morning of March 29th. It had rained a lot that night and the wind may have carried some of that rain into the coop. She stretches her neck out and makes labored breathing sounds when she breathes in and out. I have not noticed her shaking...
