Hi all! So pleased to announce the arrival of 7 fluffy butts yesterday that my Speckled Sussex hen hatched. Here's a pic:
I have a question though. It's quite concerning actually. She had 12 eggs under her at the beginning. She hatched 7 chicks and there was only 1 left in the nest that...
Hope you all enjoy this! This link takes you to my YouTube video. It's about 45 seconds long. I'm so excited to finally have a broody after 4 years with chickens.
Thanks London Hens for your input. I have figured out that she's getting off the nest around noon each day. I'm find a HUGE poop everyday in the run. And I can tell that she's eating/drinking. She's in her own little pen. I'm very excited and hope she hatches a few.
Here's a picture of my...
Thanks for the reply! This isn't first broody, so I'm a little worried. :) She's my little "pet" so I offered her some pellets by hand a few minutes ago and she gobbled them up but stayed in the best. It got down in the 30's this morning so she's not getting off those eggs.
Do you know anyone local that could give you fertile eggs? The owner of my local feed store was good enough to provide a dozen fertile for my broody. You might check Craig's list, too.
Thanks, BirdGirlz for the advice. I'm going to make the switch tonight and will take all that are under her, which I think is about a dozen, and replace with 12 fertile eggs from my friend. I'm saving the other 6 fertile ones because I think one of my Dominiques has gone broody as well. Wow! And...
Hi again! Update on my first time ever broody. My husband and I moved her last night to her own pen with a bigger nest box. This morning after sunup she was up off the nest scratching around and wondering where the heck she was. :) She's been back on the nest now for several hours. I've gotten...
Thanks for your congrats! I do feel like an expectant mom, in a way :) Thanks for the advice about replacing the eggs. I'll do it all at once and make sure they're not too cold. I'll keep you posted, and yes, she is a speckled sussex and my favorite one.
I am VERY excited and pleased to be able to announce that after 3 years of keeping chickens I have my first broody hen! She's been on her nest for 3 days and nights straight. This is a picture I just took of her sleeping. She has her head tucked under her wing so you can't see it.
I'm...
Thank you both for your help. The little chick died about an hour ago. I would not have been comfortable with tube feeding. I'm afraid I'd do more damage than good. Its lungs were definitely compromised from the start. Thanks again, BYC friends!
This chick hatched Friday and has had distressed breathing since then. The hatch was normal, no assistance needed, all other chicks are fine. I've put Duramycin-10 in the water and am "helping" it drink. I'm including a couple of videos...
and
First time putting videos in post, so hope this...
Cool! My hatch ended this morning. I ended up with 25 hatching out of 30 that went into lockdown. I've already sold 9. So excited for everyone, especially the first-timers!!
Yep...the hazards of shipped eggs. I tried several times last year with horrible hatch rates. I got so frustrated with the post office, too. Not good for the blood pressure!
Let's hope we do better this time, right?
