OMG that is horrific. I'm so sorry that happened to the chicken, and to you. Also very sweet RE the roosters gathering everyone out.
About 2 weeks ago I went on a 2 night holiday I had won, and my family was feeding the hens. On the day I returned I IMMEDIATELY noticed my favourite hen was...
OK. Thanks. Yeah, my loner hen presently has a bad case of NF Mites, so I'm in the process of throwing out all of the bedding and cleaning the coop. These mites things are horrible. In my forum reading RE mites I read a lot about the leg mites, and it seems to be that a warm soak, with a nail...
Hi
I'm a bit weird in that I don't want the meat or eggs (vegan) so I just like the company. I find them great companions :-) What I mean is oldies are fine!
I would gumtree them for sure. I can only take 1-2 because I live in a rental.
Don’t laugh
I spent $50 on add-ons and less than $10 on the actual coop... Basically, with a handsaw, drill and some free pallets, I managed to bump together a house for my new kiddles. Ignore the piece of wood leaning there. It’s covered in art work by my 10 year old sister. I was worried...
I'm with you - was caring for a sick hen who then got an outbreak.
The mites are driving me BONKERS. The mites are a horror story!
Cool tip about the Vaseline! I personally use DEET on my hands and legs and neck.
Aren't mites horrible?
I feel like I'm absolutely insane with it, and have to check myself constantly, even though I'm 90% I'm being paranoid...but now I know to shower as soon as I've dealt with any of the chicken areas. It's so horrible though, and totally feel your pain.
They may not live...
I can vouch that maggots will eat live flesh! I just lost a chook to it last week. I felt very guilty but it happened so quickly. A hard lesson, but I agree with your sentiment - clean those butts!
All the best x
I'm glad you've been successful with fixing her. My chook died last week from flystrike. It's so horrible! I was bathing her epsom salts and spraying with betadine, while giving her antibiotics in her egg. She was only eating boiled eggs. I hope yours soon heals up and can return to the coop...
This is so cute. I imagine the oil on the feathers may be enough to keep them afloat, like a duck? Or a chicken floatie haha.
I'm going to bring my chooks to my mum's house for a dip in her pool while she's away for the holidays
Hey, thanks for getting back to me so quick! They don't have to be ex-battery necessarily. Especially if they need a new home.
I can only have a few, however. How many need re-homing?
Hi
I'm from Perth WA and trying to find some organisations or persons that deal with rescued battery hens... Anyone know of someone I could contact? My current loner hen needs a friend.
Haha I will take a look, thank you!. Yeah I've got my temporary coop set up, its just surprisingly difficult to find adult hens here, but I eill give it another crack. Thank yoy for your help
Hehe - the sulfur is used in a few commercial pest powders for mites.
But I mean, I've never BEEN bitten by vampires so you'd have to prove it didn't work ;-) hehe
My only remaining hen has mites at the moment, so I need to get this issue sorted before I can bring in some friends for her! I've sprayed with pyrethrum in the coop, and purchased a chicken specific mite spray, as well as Penstene (a derris and sulfur powder). I got covered in mites myself, so...
