I'm in Scottsville, neighbor! I don't have any of the breeds you're looking for but you can place a mixed order from a hatchery if no one responds. Also keep an eye on Craigslist. I'm not sure but they might still do a chicken swap at the TSC on Pantops once a month.

    Easter Egger club!

Here are my tickets to the Easter Egger party. I can't wait to see what their eggs look like.

    Easter Egger club!

I tried loading a picture of my three EEs, but am having technical difficulties so I'll have to try later. TSC sold them as Ameraucanas, haha. They sure are escape artists. I can't wait to see what color their eggs are. I know I have a while to wait. They're about 6 weeks now.

    Virginia

I wanted a couple of dark brahmas months before that monster showed up online. I just haven't gotten the timing right to order the hatching eggs or chicks. Now I have too many chicks and adding some at this point would be too big of an age difference for the ones in the brooder. Maybe next year.

    Pennsylvania!! Unite!!

During my last hatch the bator went nuts and had the temp up to 110 for a couple hours before I got home. One of those 7 eggs one made it to lockdown. When I did the eggtopsy, I saw that the 6 that hadn't made it died around the time of the spike. 105/106 may not fry them. Don't give up hope...

    Health of tractor supply chicks??

I got a dozen to add to the three that hatched from my incubator a week ago. One died and was replaced but they all seem happy and healthy now. I'm in Virginia and have no idea which hatchery they buy from. I was worried about mixing my three with others, but all are thriving. I was excited to...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Can someone post a picture of their dark brahma eggs? I've googled the color but keep getting lots of breed that aren't brahmas. I've also searched BYC without much luck. I'm in the lookout for brahma chicks and am curious if I'll be able to tell their eggs apart from my other girls once they...

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I've read that the many of the rooster's traits are passed down to their chicks. If he doesn't figure it out soon I don't know if I'd want to breed him. I am by no means an expert. My rooster recently became a dog treat and I'm new at this chicken stuff. However, I read that information from...

    Backyard Brahmas!!

Does anyone here happen to have some dark brahma chicks or hatching eggs near central Virginia to sell? I can go hatchery route but wanted to check here first. Thanks!

I have a welsummer hen and she doesn't have feathered feet.

The Natural Chicken Keeping thread - OTs welcome!

I also have a Welsummer and yes, the eggs are great and she's a consistent layer. I've been researching and want to get some dark brahmas next. They have dark eggs and are larger birds so they'll be good for processing too. I don't have any of the brahmas yet, so if I'm wrong about them feel...

    January 2017 Hatch-a-long

From what I've read, 102 is an ideal temperature for the top of the eggs anyway.

You should be fine. Mine spiked up to 106 one night and the chicks made it until we had a power outage a week later. They didn't mind the higher temp but 65 was too low for them.

    January 2017 Hatch-a-long

Well, my first hatch is over with 4/10. Not great but I'm learning. 2 weren't fertilized, or didn't make it far if they were and 4 made it to lockdown but that's it. We lost power last week and I'm pretty sure that did them in. I processed my BR Roos around 17 weeks and used the meat for fried...

It's hard work getting out of that shell and then having to defend yourself from a pecking sibling!

Two chicks out and one egg rolling some! Only 8 more to be patient for. They sure are ugly when they plop out of that egg!

Fermented feed. There are other forums with a wealth of information about it. I'm doing it for my chickens. It's easy, better for the chickens, makes their poop smell better, and helps make the food last longer. On the downside it does have an interesting smell and takes a little more work than...
