This morning I pulled my broody barred rock off her eggs so she could go eat and poop. When I stuck my head in the coop to grab her I noticed a very strong yeasty smell. I'm pretty confident this is a yeast infection. I worked at a vet for 10 years and if I've smelled one yeasty skin...
Here's a few more pics...
This is the little guy I had to hatch assist. He was absolutely exhausted.
Pics of the other chicks hatching.
They look like they're ready for their next album to drop lol!
Happy babies in the brooder
Still waiting on one more egg to hatch :fl
Ahhh...so good and bad update. Good news, 3 babies successfully hatched on their own so far. They're warm resting in the brooder. I had to do a hatch assist with the 4th egg. Basically hatched him myself. It had pipped over night at some point last night and had made zero progress in the...
I'll probably keep my favorites and sell the rest. We free range and loose some but it's nice to have a constant supply. Spring time is coming so hopefully I can make some money on some pullets and get a pure breed pen started.....that's the plan at least. 😁
So back at the beginning of the month, my broody Cochin hatched some babies and I hatched some out of my incubator. She's taking care of 10 chicks that have grown about as big as she is lol! Well of course I set 6 more eggs that same week that are due to hatch any day now (locked them down...
Ok thank you! He hasn't tried standing yet. Hasn't been 24 hours since he hatched but the other chicks kept running around trampling the poor thing in the incubator.
Oh! And as if that isn't enough ...I went and gave the other chicks to the broody hen, she took them all without incident...
So one of my incubator chicks appears to have spraddle leg. The other chicks are up running arud and this one is still kinda belly flopping around. He/she has little sore spots on it's knees. I think it had a rough time hatching bc it was covered in goo and dried blood, ending up giving it a...
Alrighty. Went to bed with 2 hatched in the incubator and 3 more hatched out overnight. Float tested the last two eggs that hadn't pipped and they appear to be quitters. Mama chicken's five babies are doing great and she's sitting on one pipped and one unpipped egg still. The one will...
Oh wow that is actually a really good idea! I've been playing with her babies and she's broody enough she probably wouldn't even notice the extra babies. Once everyone in the incubator hatches, I'm going to try it and report back with the results. :caf
I'm going to make an attempt lol. She's a banty so I'm not sure how many full sized chicks she can handle. If every single chick hatched I'll have 14 babies total. It would definitely make my life easier if she can take them all!
Update!
Have two hatched running around the incubator. Third just started zipping. There are 2 with still just pips and 2 with no action so far.
Checked on mama and she has hatched out 5 babies so far, has one egg pipped and one with zero action.
Hopefully I can get some better pictures...
