    Roo?

I feel fairly certain this is a Roo, but... something seems questionable! He has saddle feathers visible, but no visible hackle feathers...though that could just be his colouring hiding them. This back shape is very hen-like. Comb development was early, but... is now same as his other...

    What will i get!

Just out of sheer interest... We have thus far hatched 3, 2 are white with a few spots if black fluff, and one is black with a white chest, white wing tips and white head spot. Still 6 to hatch.

    What will i get!

Thank you! Our hylines are brown with a little white coming through as they age. The sussex is a light sussex, sorry! In NZ we get all sorts of sussex colours, but generally when someone just says 'sussex', they mean light sussex :P i always forget that its different elsewhere! With all...

    What will i get!

We are incubating our own eggs for the first time, and I'm curious of some of the colour combinations we might get! The rooster is a very big, handsome barred rock. We have 9 hens. Obviously the 2 barred rock hens will give us barred rock babies We have 3 hyline hens, 1 welsummer, 1...

    Faverolles vs barred rock rooster

I know this is a terrible photo, but would you think this is a full size faverolles rooster, he's supposed to be about 6 months, but is very very small compared to our 6 month old barred rock rooster. This is next to a 3yo hyline hen. I dunno, he just seems really small to me, but it's not a...

    Coturnix breeding question

One breeder I got mine from only breeds coturnix coturnix - I believe a few of his actually came from Europe. The others could well be cot cot as well, or at least part cot cot/cot jap. Theres so few breeders etc.. in NZ, that although this one breeder knows his birds & what he's talking about...

    Coturnix breeding question

Hello! When breeding coturnix, can you breed coturnix corturnix with coturnix japonica? Will they produce fertile eggs? If so, will their offspring be sterile? I should have done some research into this, but I've just realised half of my cots are cot cot, and some are cot jap... AARGGGHHH...

    Standard cot size

Ok, so I finally received some information from one of the breeders - YAY. Turns out the size I should expect is very similar to the 'tatanka' you mention above. So what am I doing wrong? Why are mine so small? They're on good feed, 28% protein. They're fed ad-lib. They have a heat lamp and...

    Standard cot size

Hi, I'm really struggling to find any info on growth rates and full grown sizes of standard cots. We don't have jumbo cot or meatmaker types here in NZ (that I know of anyway), so standard was the way to go. I hatched out 15 chicks just over 2 weeks ago. They were from 2 different breeders...

    Fiem 20 egg incubator

Has anyone used these incubators? Unfortunately, incubators are CRAZY expensive here, so I'm looking at 2nd hand (but good brands, like Brinsea, RCOM, etc..) Anyway, one of these came up - $300 for an unused (but not new) one (they are about $600 new). Are they a good reliable brand? What...

    Naming...

I wasnt sure where to put this, so in random it goes! I'm trying to find a name for our place. We want to be a homestead, and grow lots and lots of berries, some rather unusual to our area. The name we came up with is Lyonberry , but we arent sure what to put with it (homestead, patch...

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Its been between 20 - 28c (68-85f) and high humidity. The eggs are not mine, we cant have roosters. They've been bought eggs and have all had good fertility rates.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

I'm not miles from civilisation - but I live in a small town which is a while from anywhere I can get eggs - still considered 'urban'... so rules = no roosters. The first lot of eggs, I drove to pick up on the day they were collected. The second lot were shipped. The third lot i pinched from a...

    Hens... breed?

Exactly why I picked her! There was another hen like her I should have gotten. Actually there was doubles of both these, but the other one was HUGE. The one we have, would easily be over 2kg of chicken (5ish lb). The other one was probably another kg (7ish lb). She was MASSIVE. Though - I was...

What the heck am I doing wrong?

If this lot fails (any more than it already has!) we're going to quit raising babies and stick with buying in hens. Incubators here are insanely expensive, as are brooder warmers. Here they're in the vicinity of $400 for a decent 24 egg incubator and another $200 for a brooder warmer.

What the heck am I doing wrong?

Yep, hens both broody. We no longer have the wyandotte anymore (she was attacking our surviving welsummer, so she was rehomed). The wyandotte had been broody for about 5 days on fake eggs, before slipping real eggs under her. Australorp was broody for 7 days before getting real eggs the first...

    Hens... breed?

Will do! I can understand horse colour genetics no probs... but chicken genetics seem to be a whole other ball game!
