Make sure the brooder is in good condition. Chances are, it is a disease. Were the chicks vaccinated? I am not a chicken expert so I have nothing more to say. Sorry for your chick dilemma!
Hi, if you saw my last thread about the chick with the crusty eye, this is the same chick.
When I asked about the minor damage around the chicks eye, I was given the advice to put non-pain killer Neosporin around the eye. I did just that, as careful as I could. Now, a couple days later, I...
Please do not take any of the following offensively...
I am glad you put the chicks in a new brooder with a little bit more space, but I think they need a little bit more work. After reading an hour worth's of this thread, I'll add some more advice
As far as I can see, the chicks seem to be...
@azygous @Blooie I apologize if I in any way made my opinion seem like the right answer. I was just providing my procedure. I just wanted to add that the chicks I am raising are doing just fine, and are sleeping during the night. Didn't mean to cause any debate...? Cheers.
I have seen this same problem with an older chicken on a different BYC thread. Everyone who had looked into the issue were recommending to take extra good care of the chicken (i.e. making sure it drinks water, eats, etc.), and were also saying to bring it to a vet.
Good luck
Hi,
I had the same problem. One of my 10 chicks had a pasty butt that I was constantly attending. I just put a little bit of coconut oil on her bum, but I don't know about olive oil! Anyway, when I got all ten of them, they were all about 2 days old, so once the one who had a pasty butt was...
Hi!
I recently got some chicks, and also got a red heat lamp as the heat source.
There are a few reasons I think the infrared heating lamp is a good decision:
- Since it is red, it's a lot less bright, so it is easier to rest and stay calmer.
- If a chick has an injury that caused minor...
Are you talking about carving a hole for the heat lamp/heater and keeping the lid on top?
If you are, then I would probably not do that. I myself got 10 chicks and at first put them into a Rubbermaid bin. I worked great (and then we moved them into something larger, they were getting bigger)...
Hello,
I recently got 10 chicks - and they are now about 2.5 weeks old. It's been about 75-80 degrees in my area, and I was wondering if it would be okay if I set up an area about the size of their brooder (1 meter by 2.5 meters), 'fence' it in and let them roam for about 15-25 minutes - and...
Hi!
I got chicks recently, and we are planning for them to be egg-layers. We bought chick starter feed (medicated) from the same store we bought the chicks from. You probably don't need my advice, though, because I bet if you are buying them from a store that they will advise you on a certain...
If she seems to have pretty normal behavior like the other ducks (like eating and drinking regularly, walking normally, etc.), I think she's okay.
Good luck!!
(I am sorry if you have already gotten this answer, I also apologize if my advice wouldn't apply to your situation)
If they don't have a mother with them, you should probably wait anywhere around 4.5-5.5 weeks. Let them grow their feathers so they won't be cold. The image you provided seems to...
