    assorted chickens, ID please!

Quote: Thanks for the help! All but the 'Exotic Chick', the Polish and 4 EE gals were just the "all heavy male assortment special," that's why we don't know what they were/are. But it's kinda fun to guess and try to ID them, no?

    treats and scraps

Quote: Oh no, at the end of the list is a link to a list of toxic plants, http://www.poultryhelp.com/toxicplants.html. Just about every plant in my yard is on that list. Is that list a little extreme or do I have to clear my yard before I let the girls range? I got some of those plants in my...

    treats and scraps

Quote: Great link! Thanks! I mostly eat homegrown veggies only and try to stay away from the birthday cake - so will my chickens! Last year's batch didn't like the carrot or radish leaves, and I didn't have a problem with avocado shells, didn't know they weren't supposed to have that

    treats and scraps

Thanks for the hints. A 'balanced diet', huh? That's what I eat. It will include chicken in 19 weeks . So they'll probably get table scraps before too long. Is there anything that's particularly bad for them? I'm planning on taking them off chick starter in 4 weeks and free-ranging them, while...

    treats and scraps

At what age can I start to feed my babies with treats - worms, crickets, oats, bread, yogurt - and table scraps & greens from the garden? They're a week old now and have only had chick crumbles and grit. Thanks

growth on baby White Rock chick

I thought it might be the crop (still hope it is, since tumor wouldn't be nice). The grit at the feed store (rural area, no Walmart) is for chicks 8 weeks and older, so I didn't get any (the ladies are only a few days old, arrived yesterday). Should I get it anyway? Or look for something else...

growth on baby White Rock chick

Just got my dozen chicks for this year big_smile One of the White Rocks has a weird growth on the throat/neck area sad They have NOT been vaccinated (vaccination could be the reason for swelling there...so that's not it). Has anyone experience with this? The chick seems to be fairly healthy and...

    White Rock with growth

Lump isn't extra hard to the touch, feels the same as rest of chicken. Since it's doing fine, could it just be a 'swollen crop'?

Educated Guesses please! (Possible BR Roo)

They could both be pullets, my BRs had small combs like those and they were all pullets.

    meat birds for high altitude

What breeds are recommended for high altitude? Barred Rocks and Black Giants did fine, but weren't very large @ freezer time...is there a meat bird breed that would do well at 6200', in a colder climate (w/ plenty of sunshine though...)? Thanks!

    just one remaining ?

They had started laying a couple of weeks ago. Unfortunately, I'm allergic to eggs and dairy (not deadly allergic, so I ate the first egg sunnyside up...so yummy), and my hubby doesn't like to eat a lot of eggs, either. This was our first trial at raising backyard birds. We had decided against...

    just one remaining ?

Thanks to all the great advice and pictures on this website our first time processing chickens went pretty smooth this morning . We did 6 Barred Rocks and 2 Black Giants, all exactly 5 months old. Borrowed the chicken plucker and 2 killing cones, used the apple scraper thingy (and my fingers)...

how long do I raise PRs for?

New to this, settled on trying to raise half a dozen PRs for meat in Western Wyoming (6000' elevation, cold nights, but lots of sunshine). They'll start indoors, of course. How long do I want to plan on feeding them, until they're a good size for slaughter? I don't want them to get too tough...

    Rocky Mountain Chicks

Thinking about raising meat birds or duals in Western Wyoming for the summer months (May-October), elevation 6000'. Have a shed for a coop and a dog to watch them. Any hints on how to get started? What breeds would do well in our cold, but sunny climate (it gets up 85F in July/August, but it can...
