Ah, that's what I'm figuring. He actually belongs to my friend - I'm raising both of our chicks while they need the brooder plate for heat. We're not allowed roosters where we live.
Buff Orpington pullet chick from My Pet Chicken, 4 weeks old today. Comb and wattles are bigger and redder than any of the other chicks, including the other BO in the batch. Legs and body are heavier than the other chicks. I know it's early, but is this a likely cockerel?
I have zero idea how color genetics work for Muscovy ducks. If the parents are both black and white, will all ducklings be black and white? Or are other colors possible? I don't know the color lineage the ducks come from, but I know that there are solid white and brown and white Muscovies on the...
Everyone who guessed drake, you win! I have a drake who just got feathers exceptionally early! Athena lost all other noises except his hiss and I finally resigned myself to the fact that he is in fact a drake. Thanks for all the guesses along the way!
6 week muscovy cutie hanging with her 8 week pullet buddy. It's so fun to see them interact. The duckling loves to nibble and groom her two pullet buddies. And UHG look how gross she manages to get her water in only one day! Sigh. At least my plants are thrilled with all the extra waterings...
6 weeks! Lots of wing feathers growing in. Duckling had wing feather quills by 4 weeks. I'm hoping for a girl. Fingers crossed.
I know. I have zero frame of reference to compare to.
I have a 5 week old Muscovy duckling (5 weeks yesterday) . I'm hoping for a duck so she can just live with my hens, but if it's a drake, I'd like to get him a couple of girlfriends, sooner rather than later, so everyone can integrate easily. Duckling didn't love being the focus of my photo shoot...
They are. Everyone is hanging in ok. I think
They're darling! My guess is the grayish fella in the back for your roo. Both of my Easter Eggers had chipmunk markings as chicks.
Wing of my duckling. 30 days old. Guesses on duck vs drake? I have nothing to compare it to. This is my one and only duckling. I hear feathers come in earlier on females, but again, I have nothing to compare it to. And I know it's early. Just a guess for fun?
@SonoranChick Cora is darling! I can't believe she's 7 months old already!
@Fishybiz my girls have definitely slowed way down on egg production in the heat.
The flock is doing ok. I'm in California visiting family, so Mr. Geranium is taking care of everyone. My muscovy duckling is 4 weeks now...
I lost one of my Buff Orpingtons today. Found her dead in the run this morning. And that was after rescuing one of my Australorps from possible heat stroke yesterday. It's going to be a long, long summer. I've got shade, water, ice, frozen treats, all the things.
They have lots of shade and water. I've been putting out a frozen water bottle and frozen corn in ice. Today I put out some terra cotta saucers filled with ice cubes in their favorite shade spots. They won't go into water willingly, but I was thinking of making them a muddy area, because they...
