    What is this thing???

That crossed my mind also, but it's pretty "meaty." I was really trying to avoid cutting it open, but that would probably give me a better idea.

    What is this thing???

One of my hens (red sex link just about a year old) walked by and pooped(?) this thing out. She tried to eat it so I scooped it up real quick. What is it??? My first thought was a lash egg, but it doesn't look like any pictures I've seen and I assumed if it was some type of egg she would have...

My chick is so lucky to be alive- I was supposed to kill him yesterday

We have 1 hen whose toes are all curled in. Same as yours, but curled in on both feet. We got her after she was fully grown so we don't really know if she may have had an injury early on or not. She also had a rough rooster at her last home who tore the back of her neck open and she's...

    Suggestions for electrical light timer?

This type would be one that I can set the time on, right? Or at least set a time cycle? I don't want one that is dependent on the sun, I'd just like to be able to have the light on for them from about 11 to 12 hours a day (for example, 7 AM to 6 or 7 PM) so that they can see well enough to get...

    Suggestions for electrical light timer?

My coop is inside a haybarn. It's pretty dark without the barn doors open, and with winter coming, I'm looking for a timer I can use to turn lights on in the morning and turn off in the evening. We're in northern New York so the days will be getting quite a bit shorter and there will be nights...

    1st (and 2nd!) eggs, but...

Thanks. Hopefully they'll get the hang of it. I'm not even sure who laid the one in the yard so I'll just keep an eye on them. If nothing else, it'll be winter soon and I can't imagine they'll be going too far away from the coop but we might have to hunt until it starts snowing!

    1st (and 2nd!) eggs, but...

So, my lap chicken, Chubbs, laid her first egg on my lap this afternoon! Unfortunately, I wasn't expecting it (just thought she was coming up to take a nap like normal) and it rolled off my leg and cracked. Anyhow, after giving her a few minutes to recover, I carried her over to the outdoor...

    Off with his head???

Thanks everyone. My daughter was really upset at the thought of getting rid of him as if it was her fault. But after I told her that the he could seriously injure our 15 lb terrier mix (especially once he gets his spurs), she was pretty ok with it!

    Off with his head???

Thanks...you both confirmed my thoughts. We aren't planning on hatching chicks so we don't need him for breeding purposes, mostly just keeping him for protection since we're out in the country. But if the lead hen will take over, I think I'm ok with axing him. We're chicken newbies and I am...

    Off with his head???

So, our current situation: we picked up 10 chicks in May (straight run) and ended up for 4 roosters. We had 2 who were being aggressive with the ladies (keeping them up in a tree all day, not letting them eat, etc.) so those 2 met their demise over the weekend... We had high hopes for our...

What are your favorite chicken treats and why?

My chickens LOVE blueberries! They also really like cantelope and watermelon. When they were tinies, they loved hard boiled eggs and mealworms. They'll eat veggies on occasion and apples, but the blueberries are their faves!

    Young hen acting strange

I know, I do love it! We're first time chicken owners though so I guess I'm just being overly cautious!

    Young hen acting strange

She's not laying yet. She checked out the nesting boxes a few times today, but we just put them in the coop a few days ago so we was probably just looking. She is our largest lady though so maybe she'll be an early layer. Her comb isn't bright red, but she does have one. I noticed she was...

    Young hen acting strange

We have an australorp (4-4.5 months old) that started acting strange today. She seems to be eating/drinking/pooping ok, but she's extra talkative and extra affectionate? All our australorps are people friendly, and she probably the most, but she's going above and beyond today. Every time I've...
