Comment by 'Newchickenwoman' in article 'How to get a chicken to lay in the nestbox.'

Well, here we are - four months on, and my girls are finally getting the message. This morning we had three (out of four) eggs in the nest box and one very close to it. However, they've now developed an identity crisis and think they're ducks - they're laying the most enormous eggs I've ever seen!

    My chicken ate a mouse..

One of my girls was caught in the act of killing a mouse by my partner who called me to deal with it! He said he didn't want them eating mice in case it affected the eggs. After telling him to get a grip, he still insisted I retrieve the now limp mouse from the unrelenting jaws of Ada. She's...

    Dying chicken, please help

I'm in the UK and maybe it's different here but we have a charity, the PDSA (People's Dispensary for Sick Animals) - they provide veterinary care and medicines for pets whose owners can't afford to pay privately. Is there anything similar where you are?

Help! Neighbor's dog continues to kill chickens!

Really sorry to hear this - I'm totally paranoid about my girls as we live in a very rural part of the UK, where foxes are the main problem, though I couldn't bring myself to kill one even if I had the means to do so! As soon as it starts to get dark, I'm out there shutting them up in their...

    Dying chicken, please help

I'm fairly new to keeping chickens and have no idea what it might be but it sounds like it would be worth taking her to the vet. I hope she gets better soon but would it also be worthwhile quarantining her until you know what the problem is?

    Girls laying under roost!

Hmm, it sounds as if chickens are the most stubborn creatures! I kind of like that about them :D

Hi Cassie. Guess what? I'm a psychology lecturer, gloriously child-free, love to read (I'm a big Jane Austen fan), have recently taken up patchwork (having always sewn), and have sisters I don't get on with. As for sociopaths and narcissists, we only need to observe our politicians in action...

    Girls laying under roost!

Forgot to add - they're quite young and have been laying for about two months.

    Girls laying under roost!

Hi! Yes, I did try that but it didn't work, hence I went out and bought the fake eggs. Argh!!!!

    Girls laying under roost!

Hello Aart. Well, I can't be entirely sure they aren't, as they have generally laid one or two eggs first thing before I've even let them out. The other eggs are laid later in the day so either those are being laid directly in the poo or they're going inside, hopping onto the roost and laying...

What is your Chicken's Favourite Food? (List 3 only)

Bananas, bread, my trousers - not necessarily in that order!

    Girls laying under roost!

Hmm, interesting ... so if I were to put a nest box under the roost, presumably it would need a lid so the poo couldn't land in it?

Welcome, from the Peak District in the UK :frow This is a really useful site - I'm new to chicken keeping too and use BYC to answer all my questions so I'm sure you'll find it really helpful.

Hi Cassie - I think I know what you mean. It's lovely to get a letter, and so incredibly rare these days. My post is generally just stuff I don't want, like bills and junk mail. How often would you want to write? Perhaps if you also mentioned some of your interests so people can see if you'd...

    Girls laying under roost!

Thanks for replying. It's a small hen house and the main part (with the roost) is brighter than the nest boxes because of the location of the pop-hole. You'd have thought they'd prefer laying in a nice clean, comfy nest box to a pile of poo!

    Girls laying under roost!

Thanks for replying. I put the fake eggs in the nest boxes a few days ago but no luck yet - they're still laying under the roost!
