    Ants on eggs?

These eggs are from two different hens, and one of them consistently has ants all over it… is there something going on with my hen I should be concerned about?

    Unstable hen

We have a light Sussex who is about 18 months old, happy and healthy. Lately she has become unstable - ie if she scratches her face, she generally falls over, and often loses her balance when scratching, and has also started walking backwards a bit after scratching (bit hard to explain). She’s...

    Am I a Barnevelder?

Last week/this week update - I don’t think she will change much more now, except keep maturing.

    Light & buff Sussex

She is such a sweetie, we love her nonetheless :) Spends a lot of time back and forth to the feeder, I think because she doesn’t get as much at the same time as the others, but growing heaps and a big girl... so I think other than speed, I think she’s doing fine!

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

I’ve been mixing a little ACV and garlic in their water since she was sick. I think she had a big moult, and 3 days ago went back to her clamber all over you self... and laid an egg today! So happy she is back to normal :)

    Am I a Barnevelder?

Her name is Dora (the explorer) - absolutely into EVERYTHING and constantly on the move... so it took a long time to get photos! She is lovely, though :)

    Am I a Barnevelder?

Thank you, good to know! One of the other girls we got at the same place is definitely not what she was supposed to be, so was curious.

    Barred Plymouth Rock chicks

Here they are now - very chatty, very happy, big girls! One had been sick in the top photo (hence the pale face, I guess) but back to normal now.

    Light & buff Sussex

Her now - she has a very wonky tail, poor girl. And her fine motor skills seem to be rather lacking, particularly when pecking food... aim is not very good. Is it often that chooks have any kind of issues with things like this? From what I can see her wonky tail doesn’t mean much, she has...

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

She hasn’t laid an egg since she was sick - but is otherwise back to her happy self. Only difference is that she no longer ‘squats’... everything else seems normal. It’s been quite a while - do you think this is normal?

    Am I a Barnevelder?

This is her now! Still yet to have her last juvenile moult yet I think, but very interesting. Neck feathers the same as last time really, but her chest ones are so detailed.

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

We gave her mushy food and water and more coconut oil... by very late afternoon she was a totally different chicken - back making almost all her normal noises as with enthusiasm for life. She spent most of the day asleep! Thank you so much for your help.

Oh and the poor girl laid an egg this morning, too :(

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

It’s Easter public holidays here, so finding anything much will be difficult :( She seems hungry, should I let her eat? Mushy food so at least there is some fluid in that? Doesn’t seem to want to drink so was thinking of putting her outside in her yard by herself today so she has access to her...

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

This morning her crop is empty but she is still pretty miserable, and definitely smalls funny. Less loud noises, more of a wheeze.

    Wheezing/laboured breathing

Thank you so much, I’m really worried for her - she is miserable and a bit hot. We did feed her some wet mushy feed and yoghurt tonight, I will remove food and keep massaging her crop in the morning. I’ll re-read those two articles in the morning to familiarise myself with them.

    Sneezy/snotty chicken

Thank you, it’s just been so long :( She’s a bit bubbly now breathing through her nose, that’s the first time I’ve noticed that.

    Sneezy/snotty chicken

We have the most lovely little Sussex chook that has always been a bit sneezy and snotty - it’s never gone away. She’s around 15 weeks old (we got her at around 6 weeks), it’s never seemed to affect her, she eats well, she’s happy... but it seems weird she can’t seem to shift it. We have 5...
