Anyone near the central coast of CA and have Coturnix quail?

Our little Peeper died over the weekend, and her sister is very lonely. I'd like to find another hen to keep her company. A google search of quail breeders within a 2 hour distance from here yielded nothing, and the one quail I found online at the shelter is "missing." I do not want to go...

I did not know that! Thanks for the info!

Quail is constantly puffed up and is somewhat inactive

So, I soaked her in warm water (which she hated), then wrapped her in a warm towel. No egg, and I noticed she was limping. So I took her to the avian & exotic vet (we have rabbits, too, so I know the place) and the vet must have scared her because she popped an egg right out there! LOL! She is...

Quail is constantly puffed up and is somewhat inactive

I can't find any lice or bugs, no bloody poop. She does get crushed egg shells, and I just bought oyster shell last week. What should I do if she's egg bound?

Quail is constantly puffed up and is somewhat inactive

One of my hens is 22 months old and has enjoyed good health. Lately, though, she has been sitting in a corner of the cage, all puffed up. She typically runs around the cage with her sister and comes to the door when I bring worms, but she hasn't moved much. I can't find anything else odd. She is...

    Broody behavior?

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I'll just let her have her egg and hope she snaps out of it soon. She was my favorite because she was the most friendly--jumped for worms and allowed us to hold her. Now she's just Miss Moody who wants to sit in her nest all day!

    Broody behavior?

Thanks for responding. She's a Coturnix quail hen. I don't want to get her a baby because we hatched her and her sister as science projects--now we have pet quail! LOL! We built a special run for them and will keep them until they die, but we are not set up for more. I should add that I've...

    Broody behavior?

One of my 2 hens has been acting weird for several weeks. She hasn't been nearly as social as usual and she is the only one laying eggs still. I'm learning that she just wants to lay in a nest she's made all day and night! I guess this is broody behavior? She does still get up to eat and drink...

Does winter bring about different behavior?

I FOUND THE ANSWER!!! This morning one of the hens had a bloody, featherless head and her beak was pecked open, too. Then I noticed the birds were very agitated, flying around the cage and such. Our next-door neighbors are doing some minor construction and I think the noise of the power tools...

Does winter bring about different behavior?

Thanks for the replies. Some more info: -I always approach them from the side-door of the cage, never the top -Our climate is 50-60 during the winter days, 40's at night. I did start to bring them inside in the evenings but I think it made them upset. -THe only other thing I can think of is...

Does winter bring about different behavior?

I have 2 Coturnix hens who are 10 months old. While they were somewhat skittish at times, at least one of them would eat out of my hands and "jump" for worms when I held them in the air. I was able to hold them without too much trouble, and they would even peep at me and come to the end of the...

How do I know if my quail are too fat?

I have 2 pet Coturnix quail we hatched as a science project. They eat unmedicated quail chow, mealworms, bugs and crushed egg shells. Recently I've had 2 people remark that they look fat! Hrmph. They have a large enclosure and don't seem to have any trouble running around at all. I do keep food...

    Ok to leave chicks....

We left ours in the bator for 3 days. We put washcloths down for them to walk on, and kept plates of water and food in there. We also checked on them about 100 times a day, too, though!

Can I keep Coturnix indoors? & incubator question

I bought the little yellow incubator and tried hatching quail and chickens in it--no luck. And we were diligent about the temp and humidity! I finally broke down and got a hobavator and we hatched quail in February. We did keep our quail inside for about 7 weeks. We kept them in the bathroom...

Some observations about Coturnix quail....am I crazy?

We had 2 hens from hatchlings until 3.5 months old. No roos. The hens were happy, snuggled together, were somewhat tame and jumped for worms and ate out of our hands. They did lay eggs. Our friends had 2 males who have been together from hatching until 3.5 months old. They were also in the...

    Help!

Do you have any photos? I've read that some with a lone bird put a small stuffed bird in the cage with them. Maybe that would help?

    Our roo flew the coop.....

I did see that. There is no way I could do it! I'm in for feather clipping, though.

    Our roo flew the coop.....

"Clipping wings" is a common term for clipping the flight feathers of pet birds. My neighbor clips her parakeet and cockatiel bird's flight feathers, I'll ask her to do my quail. We did find a video on this site of a woman clipping a Coturnix quail's flight feathers.

    Our roo flew the coop.....

I'm aware that he is now predator bait. I'm not into pinioning because these birds are pets and I don't want to hurt them. However, I now realize I need to perhaps clip their wings. Does anyone know if this hurts the bird? Do the feathers grow back, requiring more clipping later?
