    Hawks?

Just wanted to add onto this thread for future readers. Yesterday a hawk attacked my hens twice. I was able to scare it off in time to save them luckily, but I knew we were going to have to do something to protect our flock. (Normally they just free range.) We worked all night to put them in a...

    Bedding for chicks

I am using pellets too since I heard about all the dust from pine shavings. I lined the bottom of my brooder box with a couple layers of newspaper then put a layer of pellets on top. Its only been 3 days, but it seems to be working great.

    Got my chicks today!

Quote: I'm getting 2 Australorps, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Red Stars, and 2 Easter Eggers... May 10th is the first date that combo was available. But that's ok because I'm spending the time building the coop/run, and making a brooder, and learning everything I can about chickens. I had...

    Got my chicks today!

Thanks everyone! They're all doing well this morning and I'm loving it! They are all a lot more feisty today! One of the aussies had little bit of dried droppings on her bum. I cleaned her up so she doesn't get pasty. My homemade brooder seems to be doing a good job keeping the temperature...

    Got my chicks today!

I'm so excited, I got my chicks this morning! I ordered from MPC. I can't believe they hatched yesterday and already arrived this morning! There are 3 EEs (the 2 brown and 1 yellow), 2 australorps and 1 barred rock. They are all healthy and happy and figured out their food and water really...

New to chickens? how many are you starting with?

We are new to chickens too. We're starting with 6 chicks (3 EE, 1 Barred Rock, 2 Australorps) which are supposed to be hatched and shipped today! We're planning on doubling in August with 6 more chicks, but I'm not sure we will go much higher than that until we can afford to move out of the city...

How many chickens can I sustain on my land?

Thanks for the info! I am wanting to do mobile pens. That is WAY more birds than I would have expected. I was worried that just one batch of 25 would be too many!

How many chickens can I sustain on my land?

I am new to chickens. I am trying to figure out how many chickens I can successfully raise on my land. I live on about ½ an acre and my backyard is probably at least ¼ of an acre, if not more, of grass/clover and other ground cover. I live in West TN so my “pasture” grows pretty quickly. I'm...

    Hello from TN!

Hey everyone! I am very new to chickens. I ordered my first batch of days olds from MPC just yesterday, 3 EEs, 2 Australorps and 1 Barred Rock. They should be here in about two weeks. I already feel like a mother hen, collecting things for the "nest" and worrying about how my eggy babies are...
