Just wanted to add onto this thread for future readers. Yesterday a hawk attacked my hens twice. I was able to scare it off in time to save them luckily, but I knew we were going to have to do something to protect our flock. (Normally they just free range.) We worked all night to put them in a...
I am using pellets too since I heard about all the dust from pine shavings. I lined the bottom of my brooder box with a couple layers of newspaper then put a layer of pellets on top. Its only been 3 days, but it seems to be working great.

I'm getting 2 Australorps, 2 Barred Plymouth Rocks, 2 Red Stars, and 2 Easter Eggers... May 10th is the first date that combo was available. But that's ok because I'm spending the time building the coop/run, and making a brooder, and learning everything I can about chickens.

Thanks for the info! I am wanting to do mobile pens. That is WAY more birds than I would have expected. I was worried that just one batch of 25 would be too many!
I am new to chickens. I am trying to figure out how many chickens I can successfully raise on my land. I live on about ½ an acre and my backyard is probably at least ¼ of an acre, if not more, of grass/clover and other ground cover. I live in West TN so my pasture grows pretty quickly. I'm...
Hey everyone! I am very new to chickens. I ordered my first batch of days olds from MPC just yesterday, 3 EEs, 2 Australorps and 1 Barred Rock. They should be here in about two weeks. I already feel like a mother hen, collecting things for the "nest" and worrying about how my eggy babies are...
