With nothing changing from a dietary standpoint for our girls (lay mash w oyster free choice), have noticed a marked slowdown in egg production. Poops are normal, everyone's behaviour is the same. Going from around 1 egg per chicken per day to maybe 1 every 4 days per chicken. They aren't...
We are considering adding to our flock with some new day olds. Our intent is to use a Broody rather than heat lamp this time around.
Can we give them to our broody Silkie who's been sitting on her clutch for the past 10 days?
We have a year old Orpington showing signs of going broody but...
Dust bath is in the woods style coop, pretty messy...
But good news, she's been laying in the nesting box. Think making the box a bit more cozy with hay and the fake eggs helped.
Thanks for the pointers!
One of our White Chantecler just started laying. She's been giving us one egg per day. First egg was on the floor. 2nd, 3rd and 4th have been in the dust bath.
When our Silkie started laying, she did the same, and then on to the poop board. She figured it out soon as we put her in the nesting...
Broke my silkie from being broody about 3 weeks ago. She's the smallest of our flock but bosses everyone around, the kids love it/her.
Days are getting shorte and no sign of her going back to lay.
Is there a general period of time it takes them to get back to laying?
I second that Performance is a good option from what I've heard. Dunno they have anything now.
Took the family to Mount Forest fur and feather fanciers spring show to find breeders. Did not disappoint.

One of my hens recently had roundworms, with the help of this website I was able to find Piperazine as a solution to treat.
Just a heads up. As I was purchasing I found that the Canadian Food Inspection Agency is putting an end to sale and distribution of several drugs on Dec 1 2018...
Thanks for the help again and the links too!
Will try the Piperazine first, to see how it goes. Can't hurt to get some other dewormers on hand but it seems difficult to find Panacur or SafeGuard, maybe I'm not looking in the right places. The other wormers I see available are all gels for...
My feed and seed store was closed this weekend so split a pumpkin and added touch of ACV. Still worms.
Thanks so much for the feedback and the pics, that em alright, just one bird seems to be affected but will worm the whole lot as there may be others affected that just aren't expelling them...
So during my routine chicken checkup today noticed some worms creeping around in the droppings on the poopboard. They look like roundworm. I don't know the source but they've been liking the abundance of snails when free range.
Been giving ACV in their waterer.
Any recommendations on...
Thanks aart, i'm going to experiment with finer shavings and some wood ash up front, see how that works, if not can try sand. Maybe @JackE can chime in with his experience on that, or I can ask him.
If DE isn't good for us to breathe then is it OK for them? How much would you put down to keep...
@Latestarter Thanks for the feedback, I'm going to try to put down some ashes in the front 4x8 portion, maybe move the food/water back a bit. Good advice and good time to clean out the woodstove. Will make sure later in the winter that they're plenty cold without embers before topping up...
Hey all,
Up in Canada, North of Toronto. We have mild winters, but always below freezing and sometimes big dips. This spring we built a 8x12 woods style coop for our climate, props to Cholland for posting specs. 8 girls that roam as they wish outside in a 65 x 100 space. Often they just...
I just recently added some Chantecler pullets, they are said to be cold hardy and dual purpose. They were developed for Canadian climate by a monk Oka Quebec. Perhaps there is someone with them in your area.
Best of luck with the flock!
Thanks again for the feedback. I will keep photos updated.
No cockerel behaviours yet in any of these.
Here's 1 again, only one with three rows. The breeder said he was confident it was a splash pullet.
