No way, like I said we hatched them out so that all could go back outside. We’re in the process of building a new coop. We let them go outside daily for a bit as long as the weather isn’t too cold.
We have a silkie who hatched out 5 babies... she’s always been super friendly. She’s actually a house chicken since her mate died in a hawk incident about 7 months ago. We actually had her hatch out babies hoping that she would have her own new little flock and be able to go back outside...
Sorry for typos - I have a sleep kiddo on me. Also they were getting rid of him due to their older rooster picking on him - so I just figured that that’s what the missing feathers was caused from. Now I’m not so sure.
We just got a roo from a family friend. They have a backyard flock in a decent size coop/run. All the chickens looked decently healthy when I went to pick this guy up.
He had a messy bum and feathers missing from his chest. We have him quarantined in our garage in an XL dog crate. He’s...
No I don’t have an existing structure but I do have a fenced in yard so we might use that fencing for our run. I definitely want the run covered (our one predator loss was due to a hawk). I do have access to lots of free pallets though! Unfortunately for me there won’t be any chicken math :(...
I need realistic ideas on what it’s going to cost to build a decent coop and run. We currently have 8 chickens who are in a tractor supply coop (box said fits 12-14 chickens but I think it barely fits our 8). My girls free range for the good portion of the spring/summer/fall. But stay locked up...
does this look it’s from molting or bullying? None of my other girls looks like this. I also found a chicken a few days ago with a bloody comb. Do I have a bully bird on my hands?
No no bears luckily, or poisonous snakes! Okay it poured all day today, let me go through old pics and see if I have a picture of the coop. I def think it might be too small. How can I build a small, safe, inexpensive run?
You sound just like me! I would keep him indoors. We had two “house chickens” a silky and a booted bantam. They were so messy though we decided to put them outside and our booted bantam got killed by a hawk yesterday. Now our lone silky is a house chicken for the time being. I think the same as...
Thanks so much for your advise. My kids are doing much better but I’m still pretty traumatized. We’re thinking of clearing out some woods and making a huge run on our property. It won’t be able to happen until the spring, so I’m not sure what to do until then.
Yeah I’m definitely doing research. I feel like no matter what I choose there’s going to be a downfall. And no, my family doesn’t eat meat so any animal we have would never be made into food. I’m going to weigh my pros and cons on getting a roo.
Is this a dig at me? Not sure what I’ve done wrong... I mean it’s been 9 months and I haven’t had a problem, I just didn’t think predators were an issue where I live. I’m looking for different solutions now that this happened.
So you think a rooster is a good idea? I friend has one that’s 6 months old and I’m thinking of going tomorrow and grabbing him. When we first got our chickens we were advised not to get a rooster because I’d their loudness. That doesn’t bother me though, I want my girls as safe as possible. I...
Thanks. Last question - would getting a roo make my girls any safer when they free range? I’m not opposed to it, just wouldn’t know how to introduce, etc
So, this was our Christmas card photo. The black one in my sons arms is the one who died. The white one my daughter is holding is our other bantam (silky).
