I currently have 5, four week olds. They spent the first 3 weeks of their life in a brooder in our unheated garage in temps equivalent to what are experiencing. I used a heat plate that is NOT intended for outdoor use. HOWEVER, I supplemented with a Thermo-peep heat pad that is intended for...
Thank you both for your input! I’ve already got a dog crate set up in the coop for injuries or broody breaking. I had Pearl in there a couple days while the cut was healing. I’ll put her back and monitor her for a few days.
My WL, Pearl. Rough couple of months. Hard molt in January. Cut over her eye a couple of weeks ago, treated. Currently has bumble foot which we are treating. Flock consists of 9, 3 y/o hens. Pearl is toward bottom of pecking order. Has NEVER let me just scoop her up. Have to go out when on roost...
I’m glad i was in the right track with it being a barnevelder and for sure that’s a mix up I can live wit! And she’s got such a cute personality. Chatty, but cute!
Farm store hatchery chick. Labeled as SS. 10 wks old. Yellow non feathered legs. 4 toes. Single comb. I guess i was expecting, well, more speckles. Is it just too early? Or is this not even a SS? Could it be a Barnevelder? I wouldn’t expect that at farm store but
They aren’t laying yet. We haven’t even added the nest boxes. They will be in the front corner, this side of the feed bin. They will be 18” off the floor. The poop board is 36” off the floor.
I used to live just south of you in the Sarasota/Bradenton area. Our coop was a VERY similar set up to what Alaskan posted and commented on above. It worked out great. If it weren't for the open concept I think the girls would have roasted. I know I was roasting and that's why I'm further north...
That's funny, I had feed/water under board to start and then moved them bc I came up with the "infirmary" idea. but if I need to separate can just cross that bridge when I get there.
Feeder/waterer ideas are still up in the air. Less mess with more floor space would be ideal. I like the pvc feeders I've seen so that is definitely an option. And YES lots of windows for natural light and ventilation are planned. will also have ventilation up. top
