Can anyone help? Ladies or gentlemen?

Some things that may tell you...You may see little tiny bumps where spurs may form on the back inner leg. Also, females hold their tails higher, whereas males tend to droop and curve down. Female tail feathers are perfect and round at the ends whereas the boys tend to be a bit ragged. Another...

    Chicken eating cat litter

I wonder if her coop smelled fresh the next day? I caught my birds in the garage eating my cat's clumping litter. No problems, thank God.

I feel so bad, my poor polish izzy (she's OK)

Do trim the feathers. Go to town on them. I trim mine every three weeks or so. My Muffy girl is getting used to it. But trimming does not help them from wondering off and getting lost. You can't trim dumb.

Why are imperial colored broiler so invisible to humans these days?

I have two Imperial Broilers. A roo and a hen, about 5 months old. I rescued them from a live poultry market in Patterson, NJ. Both are very sweet and extremely smart. "Tiny" just started crowing last week and is already ten pounds. These are meat birds that grow big, have excellent flavored and...

Comment by 'Pharmagirl' in article 'Mixed flocks - How does it work?'

I had five to start- bought them at a small animal auction, all sold for meat, then a bear attack killed four. My oldest girl, Prisilla, survived. We electrified the coop and run. Looks like a maximum security poultry prison now but safe. I bought two orpingtons- boy and a girl. They got along...

    Isn’t it odd...

The live poultry markets and the poultry auctions have leghorns and another brown breed (in the before and after photo). I am trying to figure out what kind they are.

    Isn’t it odd...

Some of the largest egg mills are really packagers. They rely on mom and pop egg suppliers that will keep a few thousand birds at a time and rotate them out when they start their first molt. These hens can go to auction (this is where the live poultry markets get stock) or are just euthanized...

    Isn’t it odd...

If you have a large city nearby, there are live poultry markets in the immigrant communities where you can rescue ex-battery hens for just a few dollars each. When you go in the store you will need to distinguish the spent hens, also referred to as soup or stew hens, from the broilers. Do not...

    Battery Hens & Red Bottoms

Feathers are mostly comprised of protein. Dried mealworms (AKA chicken crack) are very high in protein and they will love the treat. Give them a little yogurt for some beneficial live probiotics and a splash of unfiltered apple cider vinegar in their drinking water.

    large fowl silkies???

You can find young, full-grown, near full-sized silkies in some live kill poultry markets. This is an excellent place to also save some battery hens that are only 12-18 months and have been kept in a small overcrowded cage all of their life. Battery hens lay eggs until the first hard molt then...

    Looking for Spent Hens

Hello all, I live in northeast PA and am new to backyard chicken keeping. I have decided to adopt ex-battery hens instead of going the designer breed route but I am at a loss as to how to find some poor girls that will be processed out at 18 months from an egg production farm. I thought that I...
