I'm in wisconsin and use 3 to 4 inches of pine shavings. The key is to turn the shavings once a day to keep them loose. I've found that best, even to 17 below. ddawn it hit though; anything puffy will work.

i've picked away the shell at the hole's edge and there doesn't appear to anything wrong with the rest of the egg. I also get those bumpy ones from time to time; just didn't know if there was a cause for this?
HI. Can anyone tell me what causes this abnormal hole in the egg shell. The inner membrane is not broken and the yolk/white are ok. On the outer edge of the hole there's a raised calcification. Just curious, I get one egg like this each month. THANK YOU!
